School education:

Pre-elementary education lasts for two years. Primary education lasts for six years. Secondary education is divided into general and technical secondary, lasting seven years each. A Diplôme de Fin d'Etudes secondaires is awarded at the end.

Higher education:

Since 2003, higher education in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is offered at the University of Luxembourg in three faculties: sciences/technology and communication; law/economics and finance; arts/humanities and education sciences.

Training for the Brevet de Technicien supérieur (BTS) is offered at two Lycées techniques. The BTS is a two-year training course in the fields of Marketing, International Trade, Secretarial Studies, Accounting and Management, and in Motion Pictures.

Teacher education:

Training of pre-primary and primary/basic school teachers

Pre-primary and primary-school teachers are trained for three years at the University.

Training of higher education teachers

At State Institutions, university teachers are appointed by the Minister for a limited period (5 years) on the recommendation of the departmental and administrative Councils; the appointments are renewable. Members of the academic staff are called: professeurs, chargés de cours, chargés d'enseignement, according to the volume and relative importance of the subject they teach, their responsibility in relation to the course of study as well as their length of service.

Foreign students admission

Admission requirements: Foreign students applying for admission to higher education institutions must hold a Secondary School Leaving Certificate recognized by the Ministère de l'Education nationale. Applications should be made to the individual institutions. Those wishing to enrol at the Institut universitaire international must hold a postgraduate degree in Law, Political Economics or Political Science.

Entry regulations: A visa is required for non-European Union students.

Health requirements: A health visa is required.

Language requirements: A perfect command of French and German is necessary.
