Description of School System 

Fundamental education lasts for eight years. Secondary education is divided into general (7 years of study) and technical secondary (7 to 8 years of study). A Diplôme de Fin d'Etudes secondaires is awarded at the end. Vocational education lasts between 3 and 4 years' study following upon the first cycle of technical secondary.

Structure 

Since 2003, higher education has been offered at the University of Luxembourg, a public institution. Technical secondary schools propose short cycle programmes leading to Advanced Technical Diplomas (BTS). Some private and foreign institutions have been accredited.

Stages of Higher Education 

Non-university level

Description:Training for the Brevet de Technicien supérieur (BTS) is offered at several Lycées techniques. The BTS is a two-year training course.


University level first stage : Bachelor

Description:The Bachelor's degree is awarded after three years' study.


University level second stage : Master

Description:The Master's degree is awarded after two years' study.


University level third stage : Docteur

Description:The Doctorate is awarded after a minimum of three years' study and research.

Training of HE Teachers 

At the University of Luxembourg, university teachers are appointed for a limited period (5 years) on the recommendation of the departmental and administrative Councils; the appointments are renewable. Members of the academic staff are called: professeurs, assistants professeurs, chargés de cours, chargés d'enseignement, according to their academic qualifications.
