Compulsory education lasts 12 years and consists of basic and senior secondary schools. Basic secondary education consists of primary school (4 years) and junior school (5 years). Junior school graduates are free to choose either to continue their education at senior secondary school for another 3 years or enter any vocational education institution. After 12 years, students are eligible to enter higher education and the Mijnakarg Yndhanur Krtoutian Attestat (Certificate of Secondary Education) is the prerequisite for entry. Students who successfully complete 3 years of vocational education may also enter higher education, and are required to sit entrance exams.
Higher Education System
The aim of higher professional education is to provide high quality education and training that meets the needs of the economy. There are state and private HEIs. The two-level (Bachelor-Master) educational system was introduced in 2007.

University level first stage : Bachelor's degree; Medical Doctor
Description:The Bachelor's degree is awarded to those having completed secondary education and four years of higher education. For medical studies, the Bachelor's degree (Medical Doctor) is awarded after a minimum of 5 years, depending on the specialization.
University level second stage : Master's degree
Description:The Master's degree is conferred to successful students after two years' further study following the Bachelor's degree. There is an integrated long cycle Master's degree (bachelor and master) in Medicine lasting six years (360 ECTS) and in Stomatology, lasting five years (300 ECTS). Clinical residency programmes are also and last between one and five years.
University level third stage : Postgraduate education
Description:A Researcher's or Candidate of Science (PhD) degree is granted to those who hold a Master's or Specialist diploma degree upon completion of three years of postgraduate studies; Candidate of Science students are required to defend a thesis.
Higher education teachers (lecturers) are trained in institutes or universities upon completion of at least a Master's degree and can start as assistant lecturers in order to gain practical experience.
