Murmansk Arctic University has long-established traditions of in-depth education in all technical disciplines. Founded in 1950 as Higher Marine School it received the status of a university in 1996 and is now considered as a leading technical university in the High North of Russia.

A number of highly relevant study fields have been established at the university so far to provide qualified staff for the High North industry sector: Navigation and Shipbuilding, Ocean Engineering and Engineering Systems of Marine Infrastructure at Marine Academy; Computer Science and Engineering, Transport and Technological Machines and Systems, Heat and Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering; Geology and Mineral Exploration, Environmental Engineering, Oil and Gas Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute; and Fish Processing, Public Catering and Products Technology, and Refrigeration and Cryogenics at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biology.

There are a lot of up-to-date laboratories, video conference studios, and a Wi-Fi zone available for students and trainees.

Marine Academy can be proud of state-of-the-art navigation training equipment, ship power plants, and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

The training and pilot workshop as well as the Raw Materials and Foodstuffs Research Center have been established at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biology. Among small innovative enterprises involved in research commercialization which were recently founded, those dealing with the issues of food processing technologies and energy efficiency audit should be highlighted. Another fact to be proud of is being the owner of the largest tall ship “Sedov” which can be also involved as the platform for education process, conferences, seminars and other business events.

Apart from research work carried out within post-graduate studies, research schools and small innovative enterprises, Murmansk Arctic University takes part in large-scale EU-funded projects aimed at technological and environmental improvements in the Arctic.
