    About the University


    The technical university was founded in 1964 as higher technical institute for part-time studies. in 1972 it was transformed into higher mechanical and electrical engineering institute (hmeei) for full-time and part-time training. in 1995 the national assembly of the republic of bulgaria gave it the status of technical university. the tu of gabrovo was one of the first higher education institutions in bulgaria granted full institutional accreditation by the national evaluation and accreditation agency starting from academic year 1999/2000. information services for studies and research are provided by the university library, the centre for information systems and technologies, and the university publishing house. the university library is situated in two buildings surrounded by a beautiful park, next to the study buildings and the student hostels. its books and periodicals are topically connected to the disciplines studied and the principal trends of research at the university. the teaching facilities include lecture-halls, laboratories, and seminar rooms equipped with modem teaching aids. students have access to the latest computer technology, multimedia, as well as audio-visual equipment. the university has centre of postgraduate qualifications where various additional courses are provided. the city of gabrovo is situated in the geographical centre of the republic of bulgaria on the yantra river, at the foot of the balkan mountains. it is popular as the capital of humour and satire and attracts visitors with its cultural and historical sights. there is a skiing resort near the city. gabrovo can be reached by rail and road.
