URCI is the developer and responsible executor of the basic projects, carried out by Urals State University, in the field of computer networks and data transfer. Telecommunications The USU has a University Computer Network with more than 600 computers that link all the departments of the USU via fiber optic channels. The network provides e-mail service, a WWW server and enables direct access to Internet for all users. The Urals State University is the official node of the Russian University Network (RUNnet) in the Urals. RUNnet links the largest Russian universities via high speed satellite channels and has direct access to international networks (the bandwidth of the USU's channels is now 256 Kbit/sec, and it will probably be increased to 2Mbit/sec in the near future). The regional government plans to make the USU the center of the Regional Educational Network. This program started in summer 1995 and linked Ekaterinburg's 13 universities via speed data transmission channels. Distance Education The university's Distance Education Technol-ogy Center (DETC) began its activity in 1995 as part of the university's development program. Our goals are to design and implement new information technologies at all levels of education; to extend university education to a wider audience; to accelerate the integration of the USU into the worldwide educational, scientific, and cultural system. DETC main activities: Proposals for Cooperation Dear colleagues! We welcome cooperative projects connected with the EDE system. We invite you to collaborate with us.
