The Faculty of Economics was founded in 1960 as a unit within the Urals State University In 1967, the unit was given autonomy and named the Sverdlovsk Institute of National Economy. In 1983, on the base of the chair of political economy the Faculty of Economics was recreated again as the first faculty in the Urals region training specialists skilled in Economics (Economic Theory). Today it remains the only faculty of higher education in economic theory in the Urals region and one in a five such kind of faculties in Russia. The Faculty enrolls approximately 310 full-time students on the graduate programs in Economics and about 30 research students on the post graduate courses (Candidate Science(Economics) degree program). The number of students on these programs are sufficient to sustain a high level of activity, whilst small enough to maintain a friendly and informal atmosphere which is conducive both to effective and serious study and to creative research. The Faculty of Economics employs 27 full-time teachers and 10 part-time teachers. Among them: 7 professors, Doctors of Sciences; 3 professors, Candidate of Sciences; 20 associate professors, Candidate of Sciences; 7 senior lecturers and instructors. During last two years (1994-1995) teachers and scientists of the Faculty of Economics have got 8 prestige grants and prizes in Russian and international scientific competitions. The Faculty of Economics has mutual gainful agreements with universities from Germany, Belgium. Several professors are included into boards of some international journals. Professor V. Mazurov is a member of the board of the journal "Pattern Recognition & Imagine Analysis" and "The International Journal of Software Engineering & Knowledge Engineering". Ass. Professor D.Nesterova is a member of the board "Journal for East European Management Studies" (Germany). Main directions of research financed by international and Russian funds:
The Faculty of Economics has 6 chairs: theoretical economy, economics and law, economic history and international economics, management, organizational and economic systems, economic modeling and information science. The main principle of studying at the Faculty is combination of fundamental theoretical education in economics and development of special skills for work in new conditions of the market economy. Among basic economics courses there are Principles of Economics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Economic History, History of Economic Thought, Public Economics, Labor Economics, International Economics, Economics of Transition, Environmental Economics, Economics of Firm, Management, Marketing, Finance, Accounting and Audit, Business Law, Personnel Management, Tax Policy, Economic Innovations, Strategic Management, etc. The fundamental education in economic theory is added by special training programs in three areas: economics and law, economic modeling and information science, business and management. The Urals State University was founded in 1920 in Ekaterinburg - the oldest city of the Middle Urals - which is situated on the border of Europe and Asia. Today the Urals State University is one of the leading universities of Russia where the total number of personnel reaches 1900. The student body is made up of 4200 full-time students and 150 part-time students and 1800 correspondence students. The teaching stuff numbers 680. Among them: 5 academicians; 120 professors and doctors; 320 assistant professors, candidates of Sc. Besides academicians, 50 doctors and 40 candidates of sciences from the Urals Branch of the Academy of Sciences are invited to provide instruction on a part-time basis. The University has 11 faculties, 2 departments and 73 chairs which enable students to acquire 20 specialities and 60 specializations. Within its structure there are the following research institutes: The Institute of Physics and Applied Mathematics; The Institute of Russian Culture; The Institute and Department for the Advanced training of teachers in the arts professions; a refresher course for higher school teachers of mathematics. The University can boast of an Observatory, a Botanical garden, a biological station, a publishing house, a printing laboratory, a computing centre, a cryogenic nitrogen and helium station, an educational scientific centre for pre-university training of gifted pupils (lysee) and a scientific library ( within 1,2 million volumes). At our University not only students can study but those who decided to do business in Russia. If you are a businessman, you can learn the course "Business Communication" in order to orientate yourself fluently in Russian business world. If you are a doctor, lawyer or, for example, a biologist you can be offered the special course of Russian that will give you the unique opportunity to look through investigations, researches and work experiences of Russian specialists. The University has well-equipped lecture halls, scientific laboratories and computing machines. There are also hotels and decease-prevention facilities. The University runs a doctorate course in such specialities as: mathematics, solid state and rarefied gas physics, philosophy, sociology, history, literature and Russian language , a post-graduate course in 50 scientific specializations. There are 3 specialised Learned Councils which grant Doctor’s degrees in philosophy, history, philology and 4 Councils which grants Candidate of Sciences degree in 10 specialities. Fundamental sciences dealing with the Universe, matter and nature, man and society are being developed successfully. The scientific schools of mathematical theory, of optimal control, of incorrect problems theory, of algebra structures, of physics of metals, of rarefied gas dynamics, of stellar astronomy, of photosynthesis problems and of ecology have won world-wide recognition. The schools of history of the Byzantine Empire, the study of literature, of toponimics and arts history are also widely known. The scientific subdivisions of the University employ 170 staff research workers (9 doctors, 50 candidates of Sc.) and 560 part-time researchers ( 103 doctors, 160 candidates of Sc.). Scientific work is conducted in close co-operation with the institutes and scientists of the Urals Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The University is well-known for its organisation of numerous scientific research expeditions which are of great interest to scientists and scholars all over the world. Of these, mention should be made of the Urals Archaeological expedition, the Crimean archaeological expedition, the ecological and physiological expedition, the geobotanical expedition and the toponimic and folk-lore expeditions. Due to the activity of the Urals archaeographical expedition a depository of ancient books - one of the largest in the country - has been set up. Winter student scientific schools in mathematics, physics, astronomy have become a regular tradition. They are organised during the students’ winter holidays at rest homes and in the Astronomical Observatory situated in a picturesque region of the Urals on the bank of the Chusovaya river. The astronomical school usually attracts many students and scientists from all over Russia and CIS countries. Ural Regional Center of Informatization Head - Vladimir E. The Center staff consists of 26 persons: programmers, mathematicians, engineers and operators. Ten experts (graduated from Urals Universities) have more than 10-years experience of work in the field of computer-information and computing systems. Two of them has scientific degree "Candidate Of Physical-And Mathematical Sciences". URCI has own a network system of 140 computers, manage operation and development of the university backbone, provides support and development of the base information services. URCI is the developer and responsible executor of the basic projects, carried out by Urals State University, in the field of computer networks and data transfer. Telecommunications The USU has a University Computer Network with more than 600 computers that link all the departments of the USU via fiber optic channels. The network provides e-mail service, a WWW server and enables direct access to Internet for all users. The Urals State University is the official node of the Russian University Network (RUNnet) in the Urals. RUNnet links the largest Russian universities via high speed satellite channels and has direct access to international networks (the bandwidth of the USU's channels is now 256 Kbit/sec, and it will probably be increased to 2Mbit/sec in the near future). The regional government plans to make the USU the center of the Regional Educational Network. This program started in summer 1995 and linked Ekaterinburg's 13 universities via speed data transmission channels. Distance Education The university's Distance Education Technol-ogy Center (DETC) began its activity in 1995 as part of the university's development program. Our goals are to design and implement new information technologies at all levels of education; to extend university education to a wider audience; to accelerate the integration of the USU into the worldwide educational, scientific, and cultural system. DETC main activities: Proposals for Cooperation Dear colleagues! We welcome cooperative projects connected with the EDE system. We invite you to collaborate with us. We will be glad to hear about your experiences, to share ours, and to start joint research projects and joint grant applications in the field of EDE. Thank You.
