Placed at Romania’s northwestern frontier and in the north of Bukovina, Suceava, the ancient capital of Moldavia, is situated in an area which is as varied in scenery as it rich in monuments and vestiges of Romanian civilization and spirituality. “Stefan cel Mare” University continues the cultural traditions of higher education in Bukovina, as they have been represented by The Academy of Putna, The Theological Institute, The University of Cernauti, The Faculty of Forestry from Campulung Moldovenesc. Alma Mater Sucevensis was born and developed in close connection with the cultural and historic conditions of the area. In 1963 The Pedagogical Institute was born, with a 3 year programme of courses comprising the following specialties: Mathematics - Physics; Philology, History - Geography; Sports and Physical Training. In 1976 the Pedagogical Institute becomes The Faculty of Letters and Sciences. In the same year The Technical Faculty is founded, comprising the specializations: Mechanical Engineering, The Office of Informatics, Foods Technologies, Electrical Engineering. In 1990, as a result of governmental decision, the “Stefan cel Mare” University is founded. In 1999, The Faculty of Letters and Sciences is divided in three faculties : Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Economic Sciences and Public Administration, Faculty of History and Geography. In 2002 is founded the Food Engineering Faculty. In 2003 is founded the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport. Our University is a member of AUDEM (Universities Alliance for Democracy), IAU (International Association of Universities), EUA (European University Association), International Council of Distance Education (ICDE), Francophone University Agence (AUF).
