Admission requirements | Fluency in Romanian language required. The foreigners may be accepted as students without having to pass an entrance examination, on the basis of the baccalaureate (or equivalent) diploma. For the foreign students who do not speak Romanian, special courses are organized during a "preparatory academic year", when, along with language learning, the basic knowledge in the fields that will make up the premise of their future training are refreshed. At the same time, foreigners can study at the specializations where the courses are taught entirely in a foreign language: French or English, where they have to pass a fluency test in the specific language at the admission. |

Due to its history and traditions, the University of Craiova is an institution of higher education of complex integration. The number of teaching staff and students ranks the University of Craiova among the five largest Romanian Universities. Situated in the very center of the historical region of Oltenia, the University developed and increased the number of its profiles and specializations in order to meet the requirements of a modern higher education. The University comprises 13 faculties and two colleges, offering candidates training in fields of higher education, including 33 profiles and 66 specializations. The University organizes short-term courses (3 years), long-term courses (4-5 years), MA courses (1-2 years), and PhD courses. The University library ensures up-to-date documentation for specialists, with its 1,400 000 titles and 185 subscriptions to foreign journals and periodicals. The brief history of the development the University of Craiova follows: 1947 The University of Craiova was founded on April 25, comprising four faculties: Human Medicine; Veterinary Medicine; Economical, Commercial and Cooperatist Sciences; Agronomy. 1948 The Reform of Education in August founded the Agronomic Institute with two faculties: Agriculture and Agricultural Machines. 1951 The Institute for Electrical Machines and Apparatus was founded. 1953 The Botanical Garden of the Agronomic Institute was founded. 1959 The Pedagogical Institute was founded, with the following specialities: Philology, Chemistry, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Mathematics-Physics. 1961 The Faculty of History-Geography was founded. 1965 The faculties of Mathematics, Chemistry, Philology, Economics, Electrotechnics, Agronomy, Horticulture were united under the same administration known by the name of UNIVERSITY OF CRAIOVA. 1966 The University Library and the Students’ Club were founded. 1970 The Faculty of Medicine was founded. 1977 The Faculty of Mechanics was founded. 1979 The Alpine Botanical Garden at Ranca, in Parang Mountains, was set up. 1981 The Computer Center of the University of Craiova was founded. 1991 The "Nicolae Titulescu Faculty of Law was founded. 1991 Two colleges, one in Craiova and one in Drobeta-Turnu Severin were founded. The college in Craiova comprises four specializations: Technology, Economics, Informatics and Secretarial work. The college in Drobeta-Turnu Severin comprises two specializations: Administration and Informatics. 1992 The Faculty of Theology was founded. 1994 The "Universitaria Publishing House" was founded. 1995 The Faculty of Physical Education and Sports was founded. 1996 The "Teleuniversitatea" TV station was founded. Between 1990 and 1997 all the faculties of the University developed, enriching their profiles and specializations. The academic year 1989-1990started with 7 faculties and 16 specializations. By the 1996-1997 academic year this has grown to 14 faculties and 56 specializations. The colleges in Craiova and Drobeta-Turnu Severin offer 18 specializations. |
