    About the University

Ovidius University is an autonomous institution, part of Romania's state run education system. Since 1961, when the first academic units were established, and especially after 1989, when the fall of the communist regime allowed the free development of the higher education system, it has undergone significant changes, growing into the elite university of the Constanta region.

It consists of 9 FACULTIES with 35 fields of specialization (majors), an university college with 6 fields of specialization, and a teacher training department. In the academic year 2000/2001 the University has over 10,000 STUDENTS (more than 1,000 of them from abroad) and about 700 people as ACADEMIC STAFF.

The university is lead by the University Senate and the Rector, the faculties by the Faculty Councils and Deans, while the various departments are lead by chairs. The activity of Ovidius University is regulated by the University Charter and its code of conduct, where the rights and responsibilities of the students are also stipulated.

The leadership and administration of the University are secured by the Senate, whose president is also the president (rector, Vice-Chancellor) of the University, and by the Senate Bureau (board), a body which includes the rector, the vice-rectors, the scientific secretary, the general administrative manager and a representative of the Students' League.

The faculties are run by their own councils. Current decisions between the meetings of the councils are made by deans and deputy deans, scientific secretaries, the faculty council bureau.

The old campus buildings host the Administration offices and the Rector's House. The Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and Biology Faculties are still located at this site until the completion of the new Campus Hall due October 2002.

The old Campus, located in a mainly residential area, adds to the image we created of a public University addressing all segments of society.

The new Campus Hall, located on the picturesque shores of Lake Mamaia, half a mile from the sunny beaches of Mamaia resort, hosts the Faculties of Economics, of Literature and Theology, and of History and Political Sciences. This is a modern building with all the necessary facilities for a warm and academic environment.
