About the University

Short History

Our University was established in 1925.

At the turn of the 20th century, Kraków was experiencing a period of economic and cultural growth, and the political context of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to which it then belonged allowed Polish language education.

After World War I, when Poland regained its independence and the young state was facing various economic problems, experts with higher economic education were required. The school of commerce opened courses for secondary school graduates followed by two-years programme in commodity science. It was the Higher Commercial College.

In 1937 a law was passed that granted our school full academic status and renamed it the Academy of Commerce. On September 1939, and soon afterwards the German army entered Kraków all schools of higher education were closed. So was the Academy of Commerce. The Professors of the Academy along with the faculty of the Jagiellonian University and the Mining Academy were arrested and sent to concentration camps.

In 1945 after the war Academy re-launched its activity. However, the new communist government was not in favour of the restored Academy of Commerce. In the beginning of 50's the school was converted into a state Higher School of Economics. The teaching was limited to a narrow vocational specialisation based on Marxist economics. There were no opportunities for serious research work.

The changes came in 1956. It was time of liberalisation. Some professors returned to work. In 1974, the School was renamed to Akademia Ekonomiczna (Cracow University of Economics).

In 1980, with the rise of the Solidarity trade union significant changes occurred in the political life of the country as well as in the conditions of operations of higher education institutions, which regained their autonomy.

In 1989, when the first non-communist government came to power, and the ruling party was dissolved, the transition to a free market economy opened to the Cracow University of Economics new perspectives for development. Cracow University of Economics with its three faculties - economics, management and commodity science has become one of the largest schools of higher education in Kraków.
