The range of didactic work with students is so vast that it is not possible to describe it very shortly. To make the didactic process easier and more interesting a lot of audio-visual aids are used during classes with students such as colour slides, folio-grams, didactic films, some video tapes produced by our departments to develop student imagination potential. All class-rooms and laboratories are constantly equipped with new computers (9 departments), where students can perform given tasks and prepare materials for their master's theses. There are also many video recorders, television microscopes - one with special Japanese camera (2 departments). Students under the control of their teachers carry-out many experiments with the use of spectrophotometer (2 departments), chromatograph, equipment for marking bio-mass and make use of the specialist laboratory for the evaluation of baking flour and vege-tation hall.

Studies at the Department of Environment Protection educates specialists for planning, organising, carrying-out and controlling different activities within environment protection. Thanks to their complex knowledge of the environment, enriched by monitoring rules, geo-graphical information systems, measure techniques and ability of managing environment sys-tems our graduates are well prepared to deal with all environment protection problems at the local, regional and. national level. Students are offered a very high level of teaching by con-stant improving programs of their studies that would meet the demands of economy, society and our youth. This knowledge can also be explored by numerous student practices in our country and abroad.

Faculty of Marine Fisheries and Food Technology

Marine Fisheries: Ichthyology, Marine Fisheries, Hydrosphere Protection Food Technology

During studies students are taught a wide range of major subjects as hydrochemistry, oceanography, hydrobiology, ecology and ichthyology as well as some specialist subjects as recognition and evaluation of biological resources of sea and their rational exploitation, fish breeding, water invertebrates breeding, instruments and methods of water organisms fishing. Graduates of the faculty can easily find work in national and local environment protection services, in fishery administration, breeding centres and fishing companies both on the land and at the seaside.

Human Nutrition: Fish Technology, Meat and Poultry Technology, Dairy Technology, Plant Products Technology, Refrigerating and Storage, Commodities Science and Quality Evaluation, Food Biotechnology, Human Nutrition

Graduates of this Department usually find work in different branches of our food indus-try (such as meat, fish or poultry industry, dairy products, fruit and vegetable market indus-try, cereal and mill industry, bakeries, sugar industry, confectionery and beer industry) refrig-erating and food storage industry, centres of quality evaluation and food laboratories, catering industry and hotel industry as managers organising all complex technological processes or in charge of distribution and food trade. Graduates can obtain the title of European Engineer (registered in FEANIA).

The integral part of fill-time studies is holiday student practice in national and private companies. The faculty also uses his own local experimental stations for teaching students (Fish Experimental Station in Nowe Czarnowo and Model Research Station in Insko as well as his technological hall equipped with technological line for small production.

The faculty is in the possession of an experimental ship for fishing in the Pomeranian Bay and the coastal zone of the Baltic. All students can also take part in student practice in the fisheries far away in the sea or apply for practice and studies abroad.

Faculty of Animal Husbandry

Animal Sciences: Organisation of Purchases, Sales and Evaluation of Livestock Products, Animal Nutrition and Fodder Management, Prophylactics and Hygiene of Livestock Production, Ecology and Animal Protection

Studies at the Department are at two-levels. Graduates of vocational studies get spe-cialist managerial preparation in the field of organisation and animal production technology. Students who have high mean marks can continue their education of further master's studies.

Graduates of the Master's studies have thorough preparation in the field of animal pro-ducts evaluation, systems of animal breeding, fodder production technology, prophylactics of animal production, ecology and animal protection.

During the course of the studies students are given an opportunity to take part in many interesting vocational training periods in Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden.

Biotechnology: Biotechnology in Animal Production and Environment Protection, Biotechnology in Plant Production

Students at the Department of Biotechnology have the possibility of studying one of the most interdisciplinary branches of knowledge basing on the development of biological and technical sciences.

Thanks to that knowledge students of the Department can find tutor work in numerous Animal and Plant Breeding Centres, in transgenic centres, in different pharmaceutical compa-nies producing modern medicines and biostimulating specimens based on cell and tissue cul-tures, in cosmetics industry, medical laboratories offering gene therapy, in laboratories and industry bioinactivating industrial waste and sewage, in biological plant protection and other laboratories and industry that will develop with the growth of this branch of knowledge.

Faculty of Economics and Food Production Management

Economics: Accountancy and Finances, Organization and Management, Marketing and Market Research, Application of Mathematics and Computing in Economics

Faculty of Economics and Food Production Management creates very good conditions for teaching his students. It possesses one of the best computer laboratories operating with INTERNET and MSK at the same time using professional programs such as BANKIER, PROGRESS, SAS, STATISTICA, MATFIEMATICA, STATGRAF, EXCEL, WORD and others.

Graduates get thorough and comprehensive knowledge of economics, organisation, fi-nances and business. They are well prepared for their work in government administration and self-governments, financial and counselling institutions. They are highly valued specialists in the field of accountancy, economic analyses and macroeconomic syntheses. They can still improve their abilities by taking part in various postgraduate courses at the faculty.

Doctoral Studies

The University of Agriculture in Szczecin has been organising 4-year interfaculty full-time and Extramural doctoral studies since 1993. The studies are administered within agricultural sciences. Graduates can write their Ph.D. dissertations in the following departments:

economics, environmental protection, horticulture, agriculture, marine fisheries, agricultural and forest technology, food technology and human nutrition, animal husbandry

Recruitment of all candidates is based on the result of an interview, M. A. Thesis mark and an average mark from five years of studies. After the positive decision of the Program Council of the Interfaculty Doctoral College has been reached the final decision about admis-sion is signed by the Rector of the University. There is also a possibility of writing a doctoral dissertations in English in some faculties.

Foreign Languages Teaching Department

The Department offers teaching one of the following languages:

English, German, Russian, French, Spanish

All languages are taught at the level of elementary, intermediate and advanced. Students of the Faculty of Economics and Food Production Management have to study two foreign languages and the knowledge of English is obligatory. Most students from other faculties continue studies of the same west-European language. In case they did not learn a west-European language in the Secondary School they are placed in an elementary group. There is a special placement test for all students who learnt a foreign language before placing them in appropriate groups.

At the end of each language course there is an exam. All students who already know a given language at the level of a competent user can take an exam before the course starts with the consent of the head of the Department. All students who have passed FCE (First Certifi-cate in English) or CAE exam (Certificate in Advanced English) are automatically exempted from taking an exam.

All extramural students have to take an exam between the 2nd and 7tb semester. Students can come for individual consultations and ask for some methodological guidance.

The Main Library

The Main library serves the whole University. There are about 26106 volumes and 545 titles of newspapers and magazines subscribed or exchanged all the time. Some titles are present to the Library as a gift. The book collection is mainly of scientific character and serves the needs of students and teachers of the University.

Besides student books and general scientific volumes there is also a big reference library of encyclopaedias, dictionaries, bibliographies and brochures. There is a whole set of publications on agriculture.

The main sources of information about bibliography are:
traditional sources: catalogues (alphabetical, topical, magazine, master's theses and doctoral dissertations catalogue)

computer sources: CD-ROM English databases and Polish databases operating within the system CDS/ISIS.

At the moment there are 19 computers available for all students and academic staff, what allows all processes in the library to be fully automated.

About the University

The Agricultural University was founded on July 17th 1954. It is one of nine universities of agricultural character in Poland. It belongs to the three oldest and five biggest universities in Szczecin and in the region. The Rector is the person who is in charge of the Agricultural University and he is assisted by deputy rectors, deans and the Senate. There are four faculties in the University: Faculty of Agriculture with the Agricultural Engineering Institute, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Marine Fisheries and Food Technology, and Faculty of Economics and Food Production Management.

In 44 years of its activity the Agricultural University has educated about 15100 specialists in agriculture, agricultural engineering, animal husbandry, environmental protection, marine fisheries, food technology, human nutrition and economics. Many graduates are now profes-sors and managers in Poland and abroad.

At present the number of full-time students in 9 departments (agriculture, environmental protection, horticulture, agricultural and forest technology, marine fisheries, food technology and human nutrition, animal sciences, biotechnology and economics) amounts to 3,500 and the number of extramural students is about 2,700. Most of the departments of full I-time studies administer 3,5-year studies of vocational or license engineering and 1,5-year or 5-year MSc (master's studies) studies. Extramural studies are conducted in a similar way. The students have the choice of many specialisations according to the world trends.

In 1997 the Department of Biotechnology (the Faculty of Animal Husbandry) started for the first time. The future graduates will be able to acquire the knowledge aided by practical work regarding biotechnology in animal and plant products and in environmental protection. The work will also deal with such fields as plant genetic engineering, industrial microbiology and microbiological bioregulation of pollutants and wastes in agriculture.

In the four departments of the Agricultural University there are 376 academic teachers who, besides didactic work, do a lot of organisational and research work.

The University staff preservers university traditions. During ceremonies such as the inau-guration of academic year, absolutorium, conferring doctoral degrees etc., the members of the Senate and the Faculty Councils wear university gowns and the Rector, Deputy Rectors and Deans have the insignia of their posts.

The self-government of the students organisation contributes considerably to the activity of the University authorities. Apart from that students take part in various activities such as the Chamber Choir, the folklore ensemble ,,Siermiegi", the poetical group ,,Stop", the tourist club ,,Labolare", the sports club and many other youth organisations.

There is the library at the University with 261,106 volumes. The library is computerised, which allows an easy and quick access to the required literature.

There are also sports facilities, gymnasiums, a sports stadium and body-building rooms. The students have access to the swimming pool and to the boathouse.

In the academic year of 1998/1999 a new specialisation Agrotourism will be introduced in the Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Animal Sciences).

The University of Agriculture in Szczecin is a state university with full academic rights.

It can confer titles of Doctor of Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy. The University is situated in the city of Szczecin famous for its beautiful green spaces and lots of parks in the north-west part of Poland. The town is very close to the sea and on the west borders with Germany. There are two border crossings right near Szczecin (Kolbaskowo and Lubieszyn) and there are ferries to Sweden (Ystad, Malmo) and Denmark (Copenhagen) from the termi-nal in Swinoujscie

Szczecin is a significant research centre. Besides the University of Agriculture there are also 10 other institutions of higher education. The biggest of them are the University of Szczecin and the Technical University. There are also numerous high schools, theatres, a philharmonic orchestra, an opera house and an operetta. There are museums and galleries. The well developed hotel network and the catering business with accompanying services, with precious architectural and natural objects ensure an attractive stay for the tourists.
