Its main activities are: Warsaw University has 5,300 employees, in which there are over 2,600 faculty members (including 777 professors). Warsaw University enrols, together with postgraduates, 54,553 students, including over 25,000 full-time and more than 27,000 other students. The University has for years attracted the interest of young people aspiring to acquire higher education. Over the years it has been rated first place in Polish universities rankings published by the press. Its first director was the great Polish lexicographer Samuel Bogumil Linde (1771 - 1847). Nowadays University Library is housed in new building, opened in 1999 by the Pope John Paul II. The general constructional outlines of the new building of the Library and subsequently the definite design aimed at creating an open-space library with free access to its collections. It resulted from a conviction that the spatial arrangement has a decisive influence on the quality of work carried out on the premises of the library. An academic free-access library does away with the distinction between the storerooms and reading rooms (with the librarian serving as an intermediary). The new design has as its assumption a logically ordered intermingling of the shelf and reader zones by creating generally accessible areas with book racks surrounded by a diversified arrangement of readers' desks. An arcade 'street' leads up to the main entrance at Level 0 surmounted by an open book with the dictum HINC OMNIA; here we can find the reception hall, cloakrooms, an exhibition room and a restaurant. There is no more free-access space on this level, the rest of it being a storeroom of a 'compact' type (i.e. with movable racks) containing books inaccessible to the reader, especially those published before 1980. These stocks are made available only in the reading room on Level 2. The 'compact' storeroom of 4 000 m2 contains 1.5 million volumes. In its very centre is the treasure house of the Library. An imposing stairway - seven metres wide - leads from the reception hall to the main hall with information desks and catalogues on Level 1 and then to the main reading room on Level 2. On Level 1 are the departments of formal and thematic processing, but the greater part of the floor is an area of free access. The catalogue hall on Level 1 - of key importance to the reader - is three-storey high and covered with a glass roof. The general information and catalogue desk supplies the reader with all the information he needs to make his way in the Library. A natural back-up is provided by the Scientific Information and Educational Unit. The free-access collections on Level 1 encompass the following domains: Philosophy. Psychology. Education Historical Sciences Linguistics. Literature Geography. Mathematical, Natural and Applied Sciences. These domains are divided into sections according to the 'tree-like' classification structure with the reader being guided by a visual information system. The pressmark (reference number) label provides detailed information on the subject matter of the book and can be searched out in the computer catalogue. The colour of the label indicates whether the book can be taken out on loan. The reading room, two-storey high and with a glass roof, is on Level 2. There are places for 120 readers who have at their disposal a collection of 15 000 books covering a general range of topics: General Works. Library Sciences. On the right-hand side the readers have access to current journals and magazines (from the last two years) with about 8 000 titles available. The area is characterised by a diversified arrangement of shelves and racks in correspondence with the different format of the journals. The free-access collections on Level 2 encompass the following domains: Social Sciences. Anthropology. Law. Political Science. Music. Architecture. Fine Arts. The last floor, Level 3, has a distinctly dual function. Its northern side is also a free-access area with a similar arrangement as on the lower floors, except for the type of worktables. There are no traditional worktables shared with others - besides individual desks there are numerous single booths. In this area of limited free access research workers have at their disposal nineteenth century publications. The reserved collections in the southern part are grouped into the following sectors ('galleries'): Manuscripts, Maps, Etchings, Old Printed Texts, Music, and Documentation of Social Life. Library stocks consist of 1,540,000 books, 610,000 journals and magazines, 302,000 items in the reserved collections and the current subscription of 1,200 titles of foreign journals and magazines. All works published after 1994 are enlisted in the computer catalogue; the card catalogue has not been updated since 1998. The computer catalogue (online) contains about 170 000 bibliographical descriptions and 240 000 items - of which 24 000 bibliographical descriptions and 37 000 items refer to the libraries of the respective University departments. The Central File of Normalised Entries enhances joint cataloguing and maintains consistency of databases of over twenty co-operating libraries, among others the university libraries in Karaków, Gdansk, Wroclaw, Lublin and Torun. The File contains 280 000 formal entries and 40 000 thematic entries compatible with the language of thematic entries (KABA) developed at the University Library. The English and French equivalents of the thematic entries serve as cross-references to the entries in Polish. It should be noted that thematic entries were not attributed to books published before 1994. Warsaw University Library offers 110 computers available to the readers, grouped into the following categories: - 21 computers: those with access to the main catalogue of the Library (OPAC) only and those with additional access to the temporary database of the Educational Books Collection (UNIKAT), - 31 computers with access to the main catalogue of the Library, to databases on CD-ROMs and to online journals and magazines, - 30 computers with full access to the Internet and local networks, - 24 computers in individual booths with full access to the Internet and local networks with the option of individual work (Microsoft Office), - 4 computers adapted to the needs of visually impaired persons (two in individual booths and two free-access ones). HEALTH SERVICE AND INSURANCE According the new National Health Care Service reform all students of Warsaw University can acquire the services of National Health Care System. Part-time students, unlike the regular day students, are not eligible for any other welfare benefit (University student dormitories, scholarships, etc.) Insurance: Students in all courses of study are eligible for the accident insurance offered by Polish insurance agencies. It covers the whole academic year and the holidays. It is up to the student to choose the amount insured. Detailed information concerning the health requirements people entering Poland must meet as well as information on other kinds of insurance can be obtained from Polish Consulates. STUDENT ACCOMMODATION Foreign students may use all Warsaw University student houses. Polish Government grant holders are automatically entitled to accommodations. Under international agreements, Poland also provides them with scholarships and covers full board. The level of the scholarship depends, in each case, on the housing costs. Accommodations in a student house range from 290 to 360 PLN per month depending on its standard. Total monthly aid is ca. 1,000 PLN. Similarly, Warsaw University grant holders, who come to Poland on the basis of agreements between Polish and foreign universities, are provided with this package. Students who choose to study at Warsaw University on foreign currency payment basis, may reside at student dormitories provided they have booked them earlier (that is, at least a few weeks before the beginning of the academic year). Normally there are no places to be offered during the academic year. At present the University offers accommodation in six student dormitories in Warsaw. They include the following: First-year foreign students, who are Republic of Poland grant holders, are offered accommodations by the Student Affairs Office. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Applicants seeking admission to Warsaw University must meet the requirements laid down by Polish law and the University's regulations. They comprise of the following: All documents from applicants interested in studying in Poland must be received by the given faculties by the fixed deadlines. In most cases the deadline is in the beginning of June. Foreigners who do not speak Polish must enrol in Polish language courses at one of the centres recognised by the Polish Ministry of Education. A faculty's requirements may be different from those in the applicant's home country, which may result from differences in secondary school curricula between Polish and foreign schools. Foreigners are also taught the necessary Polish terminology for study in specific majors, as well as basic information about Poland and its culture. Summer courses of Polish language and culture are also organised by the Institute of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners "Polonicum" within the Faculty of Polish Philology at Warsaw University.
