The origins of the University of Silesia The history of the University of Silesia goes back to the period after World War II. After half a century of efforts, on June 8th 1968, the University of Silesia was founded, as the ninth university in Poland on the basis of the Higher School of Pedagogy and the Branch of the Jagiellonian University. At the moment of its foundation the University employed 46 full professors and associate professors, and 170 assistant professors and instructors. There were 4 faculties: the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; Humanistic Faculty; Faculty of Technical Education and the Faculty of Law and Administration with the student body of almost six thousand. Soon , new Faculties were set up: in 1973 the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, Faculty of Philology; in 1974 the Faculty of Earth Sciences; in 1975 the Faculty of Education and Psychology; in 1977 the Faculty of Pedagogic and Artistic Education in the Cieszyn Branch of the University and in 1978 the Faculty of Radio and Television. At present the University educates over 38 000 students in 10 faculties and 6 inter - faculty units. At the same time the University employs 1797 academic staff members. The University is an autonomous state university and has full academic rights, including the right to confer the doctoral degrees as well as post-doctoral degrees and honorary doctorates. There are campuses in five cities in the region: Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów, Jastrzębie and Cieszyn. The majority of faculties are located in Katowice. The main University site, a five- minute-walk from the centre of Katowice, gives access to the many amenities of this progressive city. The Region The University is placed mainly in Katowice, a capital of Upper Silesia, which is the region of Poland located in the southern part of Poland, almost - in the centre of Europe. It is a heavily industrialised region. A coal, steel and other industries exert a strong influence on our life. For that reason we concentrate on equipping our students for life as well as for work, for a deeper understanding of their inner resources. Our close links with the Silesian region and local industries play an important role in ensuring that our courses meet the demands of the present day world and fulfil students' expectations. While describing the capital city of Upper Silesia - Katowice, one cannot avoid the word "largest". Therefore, with its population of about 400 000 its concentration of coal mines and various industries, Katowice is one the Polish greatest centres for economy, transport, science and culture A quarter of the population of Poland lives within an hour's drive from Katowice. As before World War II, Katowice is now a city where important economic decisions are made and where good business is done. Katowice is the place where state institutions are based such as State Coal Agency S. A., Higher Mining Office and others. The city has a number of banks, stock-exchanges, self-governing organisations and insurance agencies as well as other firms and institutions which jointly create a favourable environment for business. More than 40 000 businesses, including approximately 400 joint venture partnerships, operate in the city. Apart from that, Katowice also houses over ten science and research institutes. Katowice is a significant centre of science and education. There are nine institutions of higher education: the University of Silesia, the Academy of Economics, the Musical Academy, the Silesian Medical Academy, the Academy of Physical Education, the Silesian Polytechnic, the Graphic Art Department - branch of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, the Silesian Higher Theological Seminary, the Franciscan Higher Theological Seminary. Library of the University of Silesia The University of Silesia Main Library was found together with the foundation of the University of Silesia on the basis the earlier existing libraries of the Pedagogical College and the Jagiellonian University Branch in Katowice. The book collection consisted then of 80000 volumes. The development of the University, foundation of new faculties, growing number of students and staff members gave rise to the foundation of new libraries and enlarging the book collection. At present the structure of the library network of the University of Silesia covers the Main Library (ca. 300000 vols.) and 18 faculty and department libraries (ca. 1000000 vols.). Within the University there are libraries of institutions cooperating with the University of Silesia: the British Council Library, the Alliance Francaise Library and the Goethe Institute Library. There are about 2650 Polish and foreign journals subscribed by the University; special collections (microfilms, microfiches, tapes, records, cartography, graphics and others cover now about 24000 items). The Main Library keeps contacts with scientific centres at home and abroad (300 institutions, including 215 foreign), running exchange of scientific publications. The library offer also excellent computing facilities. This comprises networks of PCs, data bases and an InfoWare CD/HD system. Polish Language Courses All applicants whose first language is not Polish are required to submit evidence of their eligibility in Polish language. If you are planning to attend the University prepare yourself in advance at the School of Polish Language and Culture Pl. Sejmu Slaskiego 1, 40-032 Katowice, Poland. Courses are available as follows: Four-month Polish Language courses: The curriculum for beginners. The curriculum for intermediate students. The curriculum for advanced students. Types of classes: languages classes, conversation, work in a media collection - handbooks, tapes, video tapes, computer programmes. Classes are held from Monday to Friday, 10 hours a week, 150 hours a course; consultations and work in media collection: 5 hours a week, 75 hours a course. Each course begins with a qualifying test which determines the participant's level. The course ends with an exam. A person who completes the course receives a diploma certifying completion of the course and a certificate which confirms the degree of mastery of Polish. The courses are organised twice a year, March - June and October - January, in Katowice. The course fee: The fee for the course is 1200 USD and includes language classes, conversation classes, using the "media collection". It does not cover the cost of meals and accommodation. There is, however, a possibility to book lunches in the university cafeteria and accommodation in the university hostel. For organised groups (5 people or more) there is a 10% fee reduction for each participant. A person who takes part in a higher level course after completing a lower level is offered a 10% fee reduction. The reduction of 10% is also granted to persons who take part in School courses for the third time. If this person is a member of an organised group additional 10% fee reduction is offered. Rules of participation The course is open to anyone who is over 18 years and has completed secondary education. In order to take part in the course you should submit a filled in application form for the course to the School together with a receipt of payment of the registration fee of the amount of 200 USD not later than two months before the beginning of a particular course. Intensive Polish Language Courses The courses are organised three times a year: in March, May and October. There are three types of curricula: for beginners, for intermediate students and for advanced students. Classes are held from Monday to Friday - 3 hours a day. The programme includes 60 hours: 40 hours of language classes and 20 hours of additional classes (conversation, work with audio-visual aids and computer programmes, writing essays). According to the needs and abilities of students, classes may be organised in groups or for individual students. Summer School of Polish Language, Literature and Culture. The courses of the Summer School of Polish Language, Literature and Culture are held at the University Campus in Cieszyn - a charming, historic city situated at the foot of the Beskidy Mountains, near the border with the Czech Republic. Duration of the course - four weeks during the month of August. The programme of the Course includes:
Business Polish The course is designed for people who have a basic knowledge of Polish. The aim of the course is to improve their general language qualification as well as to teach the vocabulary and skills needed in business. The course is held in Katowice and includes 50 hours of classes. |
