About the Courses
Master Degree in Urban Management
The Masters programme offers an intensive professional education in urban management for cities in emerging economies over a period of 12 months, consisting of a Lecture block, Fieldwork and a Thesis Writing block, each contributing to an integrated understanding of urban management issues.
A review of urban management issues and selected case studies reveals how actors are involved in shaping urban development. Apart from various government departments, the private sector, NGOs, CBOs, pressure groups and the general public all have a dynamic role to play in urban processes. The impact of actions undertaken can have positive or negative external affects on urban groups, the urban environment and the productive capacity of cities; understanding the implications of this is crucial to the substance of the Masters programme. The Masters course in Urban Management looks at urban management from a developing point of view. Besides comparing the situation in developing countries with Western European City development, own experiences with urban research in developing countries and Eastern Europe are used throughout this course.
Management of the European Metropolitan Region
The course deals with change, perceptions, and ideas. Creative thinking based upon a solid comprehension of urban realities and theoretical concepts opens opportunities to study and practise metropolitan management more effectively. A solid knowledge of metropolitan problems backed up by an understanding of theoretical concepts in an interdisciplinary approach should enable participants by the end of the course to improve their capabilities. Participants subscribing to the full programme will develop a theme of personal interest. On the basis of individual tutorials and discussions in the second semester, either in Rotterdam or at one of the partner universities, an effective agenda can be worked out for the set tasks, which should result in a formal thesis.
About the University
a) The Urban Management Centre was formed in 1991 to bring together complementary international and Dutch expertise available in The Netherlands on urban management. The Centre is jointly administered by the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), each of which brings its own special strengths to the Centre's activities, within a shared commitment to connect urban theory to urban practice, and a strong interest in applied research.
b) The Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is one of the largest universities in the Netherlands. This government-sponsored university, named after the humanist Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (1469-1536), was created in 1973 by the merger of the former Netherlands School of Economics (NEH) and the Medical Faculty Rotterdam. The number of students attending EUR has increased from 7,500 in 1973 to approximately 20,000 in 1995. The university has the following Faculties: Economics, Law, the Humanities and Social Science, Medicine and Health Sciences, Philosophy, Societal History and Study of the Arts, Business Administration/Rotterdam School of Management.
EURICUR is the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research. Our institute was founded by the Mayors of Barcelona and Rotterdam and Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1989 and has its seat with the Erasmus University, being closely related to the Department of Regional, Port and Transport Economics, which also applies most of the staff members. The head of the Department, Professor Leo van den Berg, is also Director of the institute.
