About the Programmes

The Amsterdam MBA: international with a personal approach

Standing in front of our MBA class 2006-2007, you will see a highly driven and enthusiastic group of people gathered from all over the world (30% Asia, 30% Europe, 20% North and South America and 20% Africa). Our students are taught by renowned international faculty and have classmates from 20 different countries. Besides the international character of our MBA programme, our education is characterised by small-scale interactive seminars, workshops and case-based programmes. The personal contact between the students and our international faculty leads to constructive discussions about the understanding of global business. Diversity in professional and cultural backgrounds among our students ranging from marketing to television production and finance to engineering also strongly attributes to lively discussions inside and outside the class room. The size of the class makes it possible to offer tailor made career services.

MBA Programme

The MBA is offered as a full-time, one-year course or a part-time, two-year evening course. A year is divided into 4 blocks. Blocks 1-3 offer a range of subjects from the more quantitative skills through to softer management skills. We make theories relevant by linking theory to practice, by bringing the business world into the classroom and taking the student into the business world, including a study trip to a well-known business school.

Amsterdam Leadership ProgrammeŽ

We are aware of the importance of focusing on leadership competencies in your personal professional development. Therefore the Amsterdam Leadership Programme, an integrated part of the curriculum (blocks 1-3), enables you to develop your soft and managerial leadership skills.

Consultancy project and thesis

Block 4 is a two months real-life in-company consultancy project that will face you with a real business problem or strategic consultancy issue for the company. Members of the Amsterdam Business School and representatives of the company will guide you and judge you in the process. After this group effort, you will write an individual thesis on the same or a related topic with a more academic approach.

Specialisation: Corporate Social Responsibility Track

The CSR track includes courses like Corporate Social Responsibility, Ethics and Corporate Governance, and Business and Sustainability, and a CSR related consultancy project and thesis.

Specialisation: Finance

MBA students can fully benefit from the MIF programme. You will have an increased choice in high quality electives in the field of finance. MIF courses are taught by renowned international faculty members. In addition, you will have the option to complete the MIF in just one year (part-time) after having completed your MBA.

Other options for specialisation: Real Estate and Entrepreneurship

Master of International Finance (MIF)

The MIF provides thorough training in theoretical and practical aspects in the field of international finance. It allows specialisation in corporate or mathematical finance. The MIF is ideal for those seeking to commence a career in finance, others looking for a career change or established finance professionals who are looking to boost their career prospects. The courses aim to prepare you for a professional rather than an academic career.

High academic standards are maintained and students will be introduced to the most recent research in the respective areas. Institutions in the area of international finance are involved in curriculum development and evaluation, hereby guaranteeing the practical relevance of the MIF programme.

Specialisations:

1. International Finance Track
This track is particularly suitable for students aiming at a career in international corporate finance (mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, equity or debt issues, etc.), in international asset management or investment management, or for investment analysts who become part of project or structured finance teams, or who pursue a more general managerial finance career within a financial institution or multinational company.

2. Law and Finance Track
A carefully designed course to help students trained in law, business and finance to develop expertise in modern financial market techniques, auditing and accounting, corporate finance, and the structuring of corporate transactions and deals around the world.

3. Mathematical Finance Track
This track is particularly suitable for students aiming at a career in quantitative international finance. Graduates specialising in this track may become part of risk management teams, structured finance teams, or work on the development of investment portfolios, advanced financial derivatives and other instruments. Alternatively, they could be employed in research departments of banks or other financial institutions, for example to work on empirical financial market analyses upon which investment strategies are built.

About theSchool and University

The Amsterdam Business School: EQUIS accreditation

The Faculty of Economics and Business of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is host to the Amsterdam Business School (ABS). The ABS provides high-level business education with a strong academic basis for national and international undergraduates and postgraduates. The ABS is responsible for all business related programmes within the faculty. Students can study at the ABS from their bachelor and master of science through to post-experience degrees like the Amsterdam MBA and various executive master programmes.

The Amsterdam Business school offers high-quality academic education and research in business administration. Our education is characterised by small-scale interactive seminars and workshops and case-based programmes, thus providing graduates with the ability to continue learning throughout their career. Both the Amsterdam MBA as well as the MIF attract top international students and serve as flagship programmes of the business school.

Tuesday the 27th of February 2007 the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) awarded EQUIS accreditation to the ABS. EQUIS is the leading international system of quality assessment, improvement, and accreditation of higher education institutions in management and business administration. The ABS joins around 100 other elite schools from all over the world including the London Business School, INSEAD and IMD. This represents a remarkable achievement for the school in the six years since its inauguration. Over this time student numbers have boomed, new courses have been established including the launch of a successful MBA into a fiercely competitive market, the ratio of full-time staff from outside the Netherlands has risen to around 30% and those holding a PhD to over 80%. This renewal of the academic staff has lead to exceptional growth in research output. The recent move to teaching MSc courses in English has stimulated a surge in foreign students which, together with the internationally diverse staff, allows the school to offer a global educational experience to both incoming and domestic students.

Post-experience Master Programmes

Most of the students in these programmes have worked for a few years after graduation and study part-time at the ABS for continuous professional development:

International Executive Master of Finance and Control (English)
Master of International Finance (English)
The Amsterdam MBA (English)
Executive Master in Information Management (Dutch)
Executive Master of Finance and Control (Dutch)
Executive Master of Internal Auditing (Dutch)

Master Programme Financial Planning (Dutch)
MSc Business Studies Intensive Programme (Dutch)

The Universiteit van Amsterdam evolved from the Athenaeum Illustre (1632) and now, with around 25,000 students, 5,000 staff and a budget of over 487 million euros it takes its place among the large comprehensive universities of Europe. It belongs to the League of European Research Universities and maintains intensive contact with universities all over the world. At the Universiteit van Amsterdam, education and research are conducted in the seven faculties of the humanities, the social and behavioural sciences, economics and business, law, the natural sciences, medicine and dentistry.

The Universiteit van Amsterdam has a broad academic curriculum. UvA staff publish around 7,500 academic articles each year. The university's fundamental academic research is top of the international league in many respects, and the applied research programmes are often of an interdisciplinary nature and are frequently concerned with social issues.

The UvA aims to offer an inspiring, broadly oriented international academic environment where both staff and students can develop their capacities to optimum effect. The UvA is characterised by a critical, creative and international atmosphere, open-minded and strongly engaged with society. Because the UvA is located in both historic and modern buildings spread throughout the city, the university forms an integral part of the city of Amsterdam.

Rankings

The Universiteit van Amsterdam has been ranked as number 69 in the world according to the recently published World University Rankings of The Times Higher Education Supplement. The Netherlands is doing very well with 11 Dutch universities in the top 200. The report states: 'Dutch universities are very international; they are also popular with employers and produce much-cited research'.

Within continental Europe (excl. UK) the UvA is ranked as number 10. Furthermore, the UvA is the highest ranked comprehensive university of the Netherlands, ahead of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Leiden University, Utrecht University and the Free University. The Amsterdam Business School is proud to have contributed significantly and we will strive to keep up the high standards and even improve in the years to come.
