    The Faculty of Medicine is the largest faculty of Kaunas University of Medicine The faculty provides education in 53 departments and clinics. 150 Lithuanian and 40-50 foreign students are enrolled every year to undergraduate studies. Teaching language in the undergraduate courses are Lithuanian and English. The time required to obtain the Physician’s Diploma is 6 years (12 semesters). Duration of each semester is approximately 20 weeks. Student body is 1192 (overseas 210).

    Duratiopn of studies in the Faculty of Stomatology is 5 years(10 semesters). Students are instructed in 5 departments of the Faculty and 29 departments common for all the University. Teaching languages are Lithuanian and English.. After the final State examinations students are confered Dentist's Physician's Diploma. Student body is 402 (overseas 21).

    The Faculty of Pharmacy is the only faculty of such a type in Lithuania. Duration of studies here is 5 years(10 semesters). Students are instructed in 3 departments of the Faculty, in the Pharmacy of the Kaunas University of Medicine and in 14 departments common for all the University. Teaching language is Lithuanian. Foreign students are instructed in English. They are also taught Lithuanian language. The students who complete five-year program are conferred the Pharmacist’s Diploma.Student body is 345 (overseas 17)

    Nurses with higher education are trained here. Persons who are going to study at this faculty must graduate from a medical junior college (2-3 years) and have an experience of the work as a nurse for a period not shorter than 1 year. They are to pass an entrance examination in biology. The average grades obtained during the medical college exams are taken into account, too. The duration of studies is 3.5 years. Teaching language is Lithuanian. They acquire the speciality of a nurse with higher education. Later they can carry out research and graduates are conferred master’s degree. Student body is 88.

    The Faculty of Public Health was established in 1994. It is the youngest faculty at Kaunas Medical Academy with an annual enrollment of 30 students. Applicants for studies in the Faculty have to take an entrance examination in biology. The language of instruction is Lithuanian. Student body is 143 Students have to pass final tests in 44 obligatory and 9 optional subjects as well as to take examinations in 24 subjects and the state examination. Studies for the Bachelor’s degree last 4 years. Afterwards, a student may choose a two - year course for the Master’s degree or a one - year course of professional studies in one of the following majors:

  • health educology
  • health ecology
  • ergotherapy
  • kinesiology
  • oral hygiene



  • About the University



    Kaunas University of Medicine is the largest institution of medical education and training in Lithuania. Its history goes back to 1919, when by the decision of Kaunas .Medical Society the Higher Medical Courses had been established, which developed into the Faculty of Medicine of Kaunas University in 1922. Later on in 1950 the Faculty of Medicine was transformed into Kaunas Medical Institute, which in turn was reorganized into Kaunas Medical Academy in 1989. In 1998 Kaunas Medical Academy by the decision of Lithuanian Parliament was renamed into Kaunas University of Medicine.

    Kaunas University of Medicine is an autonomous medical institution financed by the State. The governing body of the University is the University Council, the executive function being assigned to the Rectorate.

    Kaunas University of Medicine has 5 faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Stomatology, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Public Health, the Faculty of Nursing.

    Kaunas University Hospital and 4 research institutes (Biomedical Research, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Psychophysiology and Rehabilitation) complete the structure of the University.

    Teaching staff of Kaunas University of Medicine consists of more than 600 instructors and research workers, including 74 professors and 278 associate professors. The student body by the Fall of 1998 totaled over 2,100. The number of foreign students in 1998 was 231.

    The University Hospital (about 2,200 beds) is the largest in Kaunas. In addition to its primary task to render patients highly qualified treatment and care, it also gives Kaunas University of Medicine the facilities for the medical research and for training of medical students. Some teaching facilities are also available in other 3 clinical hospitals of Kaunas.

    The principal teaching language is Lithuanian. Foreign students are instructed in English. They also are taught Lithuanian language, so that they were able to pass on to the study of clinical subjects in Lithuanian language from the 4th year of education. The Computer Center, Central Library (850,000 volumes), Academic Pharmacy, Museum of Pharmacy and History of Medicine, Museum of Anatomy, Museum of Embryology offer facilities for the staff and students. Principal periodic publications are the weekly newspaper "AVE VITA" and the "MEDICINA" - a collection of articles and problem oriented monographs. In addition to its teaching function, Kaunas University of Medicine is the largest medical research center in Lithuania. It participates in a number of projects coordinated by WHO and bilateral international. Kaunas University of Medicine is a WHO collaborating center for research and training in epidemiology and prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic noncommunicable diseases.
