    About the Academy

    Short History
Belgorod Technical Institute of Building Materials was founded in 1970. In 1994 it became Belgorod State Technical Academy of Building Materials (BelSTABM). At present the Academy is a large specialised institution. By the nomenclature of division types, degree courses, faculties and laboratories it is the only institution of the type not only a Russia but in Europe as well.

In October 1999 at the Embassy of Great Britain the rector of BelSTABM, professor Ivakhnjuk V.A. was awarded a certificate on international moderation for two degree courses. The Committee of the European Council of Civil Engineers was responsible for the moderation. The experts of the Great Britain Institution of Civil Engineers were members of the Committee. From now on BelSTABM is a full member of the international educational system officially. The quality of training is recognized corresponding to the master degree quality of the European institutions.

    Academic Staff
The academic staff is represented by 496 highly qualified instructors, 53 % of them have scientific degrees & titles. There are 60 doctors of science & professors.

Professor Iija Germanovna Luginina, D.Sc. (Engineering), Honorary Worker of higher vocational education of the Russian Federation, honoured Science Worker of the Russian Federation is the head of the scientific body conducting researches ac-knowledged in the whole of the world. She is the leader of the scientific school developing non - traditional methods of new binding agents synthesis, special types of cements, effective methods of admixtures neutralization & sub - standard raw materials complex treatment. The discovered theoretical mechanisms became the basis for development of a large number of new materials & technologies, including low power - intensive technology of non - explosive destruction agent production causing object static destruction without blast wave.

Heating technological intensification of high - temperature processes, energy - and resources saving forms the scientific trend headed by prof. Victor Kornejevich Klas-sen, D.Sc. (Engineering), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Taking into account the features of the raw materials basis of Russia they developed low power - intensive method of cement production which allows to use manufacture products of various branches of industry.

A group of scientists headed by professor Villen Alexejevich Ivakhnjuk, Vitalii Ivanovich Kolchunov, Alexander Gavrilovich Yurjev, Bronislav Grigorjevich Morgun developed a theory of deformation & structural synthesis of buildings ferroconcrete spatial structures and engineering structures including reconstruction conditions. On this basis they proposed a number of new energy - and resources saving structures for unique structures & mass construction: sunk pipe well systems, three - layers energy - saving wall panels and large wall blocks, multi - purpose and quickly erected buildings, effective foundation block structures, roof & overlap plates, new designs for reconstruction of the first mass series residential houses.

The head of another scientific trend - milling engineering and technology - is an academician of the Academy of Quality Control, Honoured Inventor of RF, professor Bogdanov Vasilii Stepanovich. New in the main in essence plants were designed under his guidance. It decreases energy consumption for cement grinding by 20 - 30 %. Submicron powders for the most up - to - date technologies of building engineering were made by the method of treatment in opposite flow jet - explosion unit.

The tendencies of binding agent system development in the XXIst century determine a new class of without burning refractory materials on the basis of high - concentrated ceramic binding agent suspensions. The materials were made under the guidance of an academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering Sciences, professor Yuri Efimovich Pivinsky.

    Departmental Resources
The book fund consists of 600 thousand books, 255900 scientific books and 198347 textbooks including. The book acquisitions cover all degree courses of the Academy.

The methods of individual and group service are used. The library total area is 2000 sq.m. There are 167 seats in the reading halls. The automated library systems "Biblioteka 4" and "Liber Media" are used. There is an electronic catalogue (15 thousand entries) and a local Internet.

Scientific laboratories & classes are equipped with modern equipment. There are more than 400 modern computers.

    Research Programmes
Research work administration organises scientific work at the Academy. It unites scientific groups of 42 sub - faculties, 30 scientific - research laboratories, innovation structures. More than 75% of the total volume of the researches of the Academy is carried out by the orders of the enterprises of building material industry & con-struction.

    Basic research trends:

  • Power and resources saving ecologically safe technologies of production of high - quality building materials, articles, structures, construction of buildings and erections.
  • Physical-chemical basis of construction and architecture materials engineering, scientific basis of developing of building material structure with the set properties.
  • Design of up-to-date implements, means of mechanisation and automation for production of building materials, articles & structures.
  • Development of the structures theory, methods of their strength calculation; design of new and modernisation of the present building structures, of the reconstructed buildings and structures under construction, including the foundations structures and put-in-depth underground structures providing proper comfort and safety of vital functions milieu.
  • Development of the principles, methods and means of automated design of materials, processes, technologies and equipment for building materials industry taking into account the up-to-date level of computer & information sciences development.
  • Design of regional systems of complex and rational use of local natural resources & manufacturing processes wastes for building materials production & solution of the technological & ecological reconstruction problems.
  • Economics models of the branch functioning & building materials industry plants & construction in the conditions of market economics & regional economic politics.

  • At BelGTASM a number of large scientific schools had been established which were acknowledged in Russia and abroad. The schools are represented by a prizewinner of the Russian Federation Government (Science and Engineering), 18 Full Members and Corresponding Members of 16 Academies, 2 Honoured Researchers of the Russian Federation, 5 Honoured Inventors, an Honoured Chemist, an Honours educationalist of the public education of the Ukraine, 9 Honours educationalists of higher vocational education of the Russian Federation.

    Local Facilities and Features
BelGTASM is well equipped with computer facilities and telecommunication equipment. The specialists of Belgorod Regional Centre of Information Technologies attached to BelGTASM (E-mail: cnit@intbel.ru) design a corporative information system for training, scientific, administrative - managerial and other types of the Academy activities and a corporative network of the Academy in accordance with Internet technologies, by - stages engaging computers & local networks of the de-partments, faculties and sub - faculties.

At the Academy there is a telecommunication unit of Belgorod Regional Educational Network "Internet - Belogorje" providing access to international information re-courses with the rate up to 128 Kbit/sec. They connect up the digital transport main. The channel capacity will be equal to 256 Kbit/sec. WWW & FTP servers and other Internet servers were developed and maintained.
