| Admission requirements | Entrance examination organised beginning September for nationals only. Romanian language preparatory year is compulsory for overseas students who do not know Romanian. The "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi organises language courses for foreign students. The (intensive) Romanian summer course, which will enable one to understand and read in Romanian within a short time, is recommended for students who have no proficiency in Romanian. Romanian advanced knowledge is not compulsory, because one may deliver reports and take exams in English or French and because nearly everyone in the University, both students and academics, speaks or understands a foreign language (mainly English and French) |

Programmes: Physics of Electromagnetic Phenomena Physics of the Condensed Stage Plasma Physics Physics of Self Organized Systems Theoretical Physics Technical Physics About the University Short History of the University As an important outcome of institutional renewal during Al.I.Cuza's reign, the University of Iasi - the first university of the country organized by modern standard and principles - was inaugurated on 26th of October 1860, in the presence of the Prince and of the leading mind of this new foundation, Mihail Kogalniceanu. Being called at first the Mihail Sturdza Academy (after the ruler who was its founder in 1835), the institution would later receive the name of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the maker of the Union, and therefore the Moldavian University is forever linked with the Romanian great ideal, that of uniting all of the Romanian provinces into a national state. For the beginning the institution contained three faculties: the Faculty of Philosophy (with depths of philosophy, literature and sciences), the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Theology. In 1878 the Faculty of Medical Sciences was created, and in 1892 the Department of General Chemistry (existing within the section of Physics) was divided into the Department of Organic Chemistry and the Department of Inorganic Chemistry. The School of Electricity was added in 1910, and in 1912, the School of Applied Sciences was divided into the Departments of Agriculture, Technological Chemistry and Electronics. After the process of unification was completed in 1918 by the union of Transilvania, Basarabia, Bucovina and the Romanian Kingdom, the University of Iasi grew continually, proving to be responsive to general European progress and to necessities specific to Romanian society. The Education Bills of 1932, 1937, and 1938 favoured the progress of sciences and facilitated the fair representation of the diverse schools, departments and subject matters to be studied in the five faculties: Medicine and Pharmacy, Sciences, Law, Philosophy and Letters, and Agriculture. In 1933, the subsection of agricultural studies, included in the section of applied sciences, became the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. The other two branches of the section (the Electromechanical School and the Department of Technological Chemistry) were reorganised in 1937, when they became the "Gheorghe Asachi" Polytechnic Institute of Iasi, to which the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences was attached a year later. It is worth mentioning that, as far as organisation and teaching programmes are concerned, the University of Iasi reached the level of similar European institutions in the period between the two World Wars. Numerous remarkable personalities of Romanian culture worked here, creating and disseminating the values that have forever enriched the Romanian spiritual inheritance. Mention should be made in this respect of Grigore Cobalcescu, Petru Poni, Alexandru Philippide, A.D. Xenopol, Gh.I.Bratianu, Garabet Ibraileanu, Iorgu Iordan, Mihai Ralea, Petre Andrei, Traian Bratu, Dragomir Hurmuzescu, Alexandru Myller, Nicolae Leon, I. Borcea, Radu Cernatescu, Stefan Procopiu, C.I. Parhon, Octav Mayer, George Calinescu, Al.Dima, Gh. Ivanescu and others. After World War II, with Romania's coming under the influence of Soviet communism, the Romanian academic teaching system had to resist the new rules, which marred its dignity and its authentic mission. Some members of the teaching staff were forced to leave the University because of their democratic views, while the others "adjusted" themselves to the new requirements, either obeying the "directions" of centralised institutions, or cleverly avoiding ideological demands. Fact is that even after World War II, the Iasi University could ensure for the undergraduates a relatively distinguished and open atmosphere due to the presence of such first rank personalities as Andrei Otetea, Gheorghe Ivanescu, Teofil Simenschy, Vasile Pavelcu, Stefan Barsanescu, Petre Botezatu, Alexandru Dima, etc., who were faithful to authentic academic values. During the Communist period, the true academics that managed to survive by "shunning" the exaction of the regime (because such a thing was nonetheless not impossible) adhered to the strict scientific and theoretic values to protect themselves from the penetrating infestation of the official ideology. The socio-humanistic sciences were exposed most, as they were called upon to serve and to sustain the regime. Perhaps this is the reason why the orientation toward civic and political values of the social field was approached less often by honest academics who found their refuge in the "ivory tower" of some "abstract" values less controlled by the super-ordinated indications. Other subjects followed their natural course and, despite deficient material base and lack of specialised information, maintained their high standards due to the dedication and talent of the people engaged to serve them. In recent years, with the ideological barriers down, the University of Iasi has been going through a process of recovery in an attempt to connect itself to the modern experiments of the world, by reworking its structures and by promoting new, attractive and efficient courses and programmes designed to respond adequately to present day requirements and to the prospects of Romanian society. Organization and Structure The "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, with some 13,000 undergraduate students and 1593 doctoral students currently registered, provides one of the fullest ranges of classical education available in Romania. At present, the University employs some 900 academics and about 800 administrative staff members. Almost all the faculties offer Master’s and Ph.D. degrees. These faculties are Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Geography-Geology, History, Law, Letters, Mathematics, Orthodox Theology, Psychology and Education Sciences, Philosophy, Physical Education and Sports, and Physics. They ensure the necessary training for over 50 specialisation fields: teachers for all subjects, lawyers, economists, computer science experts, geological engineers, ecologists, and priests. Full time studies cover four to five years, evening and part-time courses for five. Three colleges have been founded after 1989: Economics, Physical Education, Computer Science and Secretariat. Full-time courses in these colleges are scheduled for three years. The University also provides refresher courses for high school staff from several Romanian counties. It receives most of its funding from public sources and is governed by the Senate, whose president is the Rector himself. Other members of the Senate are the Vice-Rectors, the scientific secretary to the Senate, academic representatives from each faculty as well as representatives of the students. The present building of the University, dominating the area of the Copou hill, came into use in 1897, and a new wing as well as other buildings have been added since then. Several research units, indispensable to the instruction process, have appeared in the meantime: "Mihai Eminescu" Central University Library, the Botanical Gardens, the Museum of Natural History, the Computer Centre, the Marine Biology Research Unit of Agigea (at the Black Sea), the Biological Research Unit of Potoci (in the Carpathian Mountains), etc. At present, the University has 9 buildings containing 11 specialised libraries and 15 reading rooms, a Duplication Centre able to cover didactic requirements and, since 1990, its own publishing house and printing press. Facilities for Students Library Facilities The "Mihai Eminescu" Central University Library (generally referred to as BCU) is also situated on the Copou hill, very close to the main university building. It has a collection of about 2,2 million volumes. BCU and its 11 faculty branches have 26 reading rooms reserved for studying, with a total capacity of about 1,200 seats. Computer Facilities In almost all the university buildings, PCs are tax-free available for students. Students must obtain an account number that gives them access to the computer network first, e-mail and Internet. These account numbers can be requested at the Department of Data Communication Sports Facilities The University has a Sports Centre (volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, handball, fitness), outdoor sports grounds (handball, basketball, and football) and there are many possibilities in the city for sporting activities (swimming pools, sauna, massage, etc.). Social Life The Students' Club organises conferences, shows, symposia, literary and musical evenings, theatre shows by students, meetings with artists and scientists, etc. Students also have the possibility to participate in the various programs organised by the French and German Cultural Centres which are both very close to the University. Student Organisations There are several associations of students in Iasi. They offer a meeting-place for members and offer various activities. The associations functioning in the University are: the Students' League, AIESEC (The International Association of Economics and Managemnt Students - address: Bd.Copou nr.22, tel.+40 32 212244; president – Ms Cristina IACOB, e-mail crisus@uaic.ro, aiesecis@mail.dntis.ro and AEGEE (The General Association of European Students - president Ms Violeta CIOBANU, e-mail cvioleta@uaic.ro , aegee@uaic.ro. These are non-governmental, non-profit organisations that have been created in order to ensure that students’ rights are respected. These associations are involved in the process of increasing students' contribution to the development and improvement of the education process and of informing them about international programmes and possibilities to study abroad. "Studmont" is a Students' Circle of Mountain Tourism affiliated to the Students' Club. Its members are pupils, students and graduates for whom the mountains are a real hobby. They participate in various competitions organised by other Tourism Clubs and Associations in the country as well as in ecological actions (address: Str.Vasile Conta nr.30; president: Mr.Vladimir I.Contratov - E mail, tel. +40 32 147358, fax +40 32 117340). The "ERASMUS" Office is functioning as part of the Department of International Relations and University Image. Assistance will be offered both to the teaching staff and to the students who are going to take part in the programme. This office collaborates with the Students "ERASMUS" Office organised within AEGEE –Iasi. |
