The doctoral degree is organized in two ways: with attendance (4 year) and without attendance (6 year). At the end of the doctoral program, after oral presentation of the doctorate thesis and the confirmation of the scientific title awarded, the degree of "Doctor in Medicine" or "Doctor in Pharmacy" is given. Founded in 1872, the Faculty of Medicine was part of the Franz-Joseph University. In 1919, Iuliu Haţieganu was named Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty continued to develop its curriculum and increase the number of its disciplines, so that in 1948 the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy was created, with the faculties of General Medicine, Hygiene, Pediatrics, Dentistry and Pharmacy. In the academic year 1990, the Institute became the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, with the following faculties: Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, and in 1993 the University was designated as the "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, after its first Romanian Professor of Clinical Medicine, who also was the first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Since 2000, the university has continuously developed its academic profile, including by internationalizing its curriculum. All the 3 faculties are offering study programmes in English and French, highly appreciated by national and international bodies and by its attendees.
UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION Courses take place according to subject syllabi and curricula. In order to ensure the optimum participation of students in practical education, they are divided into study groups of 7-12 students, each group being supervised by an assistant lecturer. The students who have special skills for research are integrated into scientific research student circles where, under the direct guidance of the teaching staff they carry out their activity in the research laboratories of the university, with access to top performance technology. The results of their activity can be communicated and published in scientific meetings, symposiums, specialty reviews and/or used for their graduation papers. The courses end with The License examination consisting of four tests: two theoretical tests, one practical test and the presentation of the diploma paper (paper elaborated during the final year of study under the scientific direction of the teaching staff). POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION Residency Residency is the standard form of postgraduate training in order to become a specialist doctor. The duration of residency studies is 2 to 7 years, depending on the specialty. All curricula have been adapted in accordance with the requirements of Higher Education Reform in Romania and its integration with the standards of Western European universities and also in order to create the possibility of applying for training abroad. Over 2075 resident doctors attend this form of postgraduate training. Competency courses These are designed as short specialization programs in a more restricted branch derived from a basic specialty or as programs for acquiring medical equipment techniques, which confer the right and accreditation to practice the acquired knowledge. In order to obtain these, specialists attend a program of courses and practical training with a duration of 6 months to 1 year, depending on the competence required. Postgraduate training courses The duration of these courses is short, between 1 and 6 weeks. Their subjects and bibliography include various fields, as well as the latest results of medical scientific research which are transmitted both as theoretical information and practical applications, using the top level medical equipment of the university.
