About Gdansk University of Technology (TUG)

Gdansk is a 1000-year-old city where culture and education have always been of utmost importance. A great number of works of art and architecture have been created there, much has been achieved in technology. The greatest achievements are: the largest medieval Granary called the Crane, the Great Mill and the Radunia Canal, St Mary's Church - the largest brick church in the world, an astronomical clock, the first cable railway built in the 17th century and the fortifications.

Among many famous people who lived in Gdansk an astronomer, Daniel Fahrenheit, a 16th century physisist, Artur Schopenhauer, a 19th century philosopher. Gdansk is also a home town of two Nobel Prize Laureates - Günter Grass and Lech Walesa.

Education has always been of primary importance in Gdansk and so in the 16th century it became compulsory. In the same century a secondary school in Gdansk was transformed into a semi-university whose graduates could immediately become third-year students of other universities. A private mathematics and mechanics workshop, which was organised in 1711, can be regarded as the first technical school in Poland. In the 18th century the Natural Society, the first in Poland, was established in Gdansk, and in 1817 the first school of navigation was founded. The first university in Gdansk, founded in 1904 as the Royal Technical University, was to develop and expand the education of technology in Gdansk and in all the provinces of Prussia and Pomerania. On 6 October students began their studies in such splendid buildings as the Main Building, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Chemistry and the Engine House with a Water-Tower, erected in the years 1900-1904 and designed by Albert Carsten. All of these can still be admired. In the first years the university could accommodate 600 students, yet there were plans to enlarge it so that 1000 students could study there.

At that time the University consisted of six faculties: the Faculty of Architecture, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Engineering, the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of General Sciences. It had full academic rights. There were 84 academics employed, among them 28 professors and 12 assistant professors.

In 1904 the University had 189 students, and their number increased to 675 in 1913. After 1921 the thriving University provided academic education for about 1600 students. Up to 1945 about 16 000 students were matriculated. The exact number of the Poles admitted to the University before the Second World War is not known, but probably amounted to 1230. 250 of these students are estimated to have completed their university education.

The Technical University continued its life up to 1945. On 24 May, 1945 the Polish Government enacted a decree which transformed the University into the State Technical University of Gdansk. On 22 October, 1945 the six Faculties: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Ship Technology and Chemistry admitted 1647 students. Lectures and tutorials were given by 112 academics, among them 36 professors. By virtue of Rector's Circular Letter of 3 April 2002 the official English translation of Politechnika Gdanska was changed from Technical University of Gdansk (TUG) to Gdansk University of Technology (GUT). GUT has been restructured many times, with new faculties being added and some existing faculties merging. The courses offered at GUT have always suited career opportunities in technology and industry.

Nowadays ten faculties of GUT provide education for more than 18,000 students offering courses leading to B.Eng., M.Eng. or Ph.D. degrees. Students can choose from a large variety of full-time, evening and extramural courses. The total number of GUT employees amounts to 2,600, academics accounting for about half of them. Most of the faculties have full academic rights which means that they can award the Ph.D. degree and D.Sc. degree.

GUT has a domestic and worldwide reputation of being a significant scientific centre. It co-operates with many universities and companies. Meetings, seminars, conferences and congresses held at GUT give opportunities to create a superior climate for intellectual and personal growth.

Being the oldest university in Northern Poland and having its own character, GUT attracts many young people. Studying at GUT is not easy, it requires much effort and hard work but it is a good investment for the future. Moreover, it is worth being a graduate from one of the best technical universities in Poland, the one which is recognised abroad. Besides gaining knowledge and practical skills, students of GUT have a vast number of clubs and organisations. GUT is an exciting university to study at. It enables all its students to develop a passion for intellectual pursuit that remains through a lifetime.
