About the Course of Clinical Engineering

Clinical Engineering

Clinical Engineering is an interdisciplinary engineering (not medical!) degree course, based on natural science and electronics. It is a three years course resulting in the degree “Bachelor of Engineering” in Clinical Engineering.

During the first year the initial modules are taught entirely in English, with accompanying intensive German language courses. With the beginning of the second year most of the lectures are offered in German. The curriculum was developed to meet both the future needs of hospitals and industry. Within small groups and supported by tutors the students learn the scientific and engineering principles, they gain economic knowledge, managerial and communicative skills.

Syllabus:

The courses consist of lectures, guided exercises and laboratory exercises, and require weekly homework in each subject. Additionally excursions to hospitals and companies working in the field of medical technology / clinical engineering will be offered.

Professional Field of Clinical Engineering

"A clinical engineer is a professional who supports and advances patient care by applying engineering and managerial skills to healthcare technology" (Definition by the Clinical Engineering Division of the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering)

Graduates will be able to work as clinical engineers in hospitals and other health care services and take over responsibility for quality, maintenance and economic operation of medical devices. They can be involved in planning and putting into operation of new hospitals. At manufacturers' of medical devices they are specialized to work in typical customer-oriented positions as product and project managers, marketing and sales persons, service and application engineers. They can set up an own service, sales or consultant company.
