School education:

Primary education lasts for six years. Secondary education is divided into general and technical secondary, lasting seven years each. A Diplôme de Fin d'Etudes secondaires is awarded at the end.

Higher education:

Higher education in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg comprises: the first/second academic year at all faculties; short-term (2 years) education in Economic Sciences oriented towards pre-service training; four-year technological education; three-year pedagogical/social education; third cycle studies offered at the Centre Universitaire.

Training for the Brevet de Technicien supérieur (BTS) is offered at two Lycées techniques. The BTS is a two-year training course in the fields of Marketing, International Trade, Secretarial Studies, Accounting and Management, and in Motion Pictures.

 

University level studies:

University level first stage: 1st cycle:

The first cycle of studies consists in a first and mostly second year university course at the Centre universitaire de Luxembourg in Humanities and Science. In Medicine and Pharmacy one-year courses are offered, leading to a Certificat d'Etudes scientifiques. Short-term (2 years) education is also offered in Economic Sciences oriented towards pre-service training at the Centre universitaire de Luxembourg. A four-year technological training is offered at the Institut supérieur de Technologie de Luxembourg leading to a Diplôme d'Ingénieur industriel as well as pedagogical education at the Institut supérieur d'Etudes et de Recherches Pédagogiques (ISERP) and Social Education at the Institut d'Etudes éducatives et sociales (IEES) leading respectively to the Certificat d'Etudes pédagogiques and to the Diplôme d'Educateur gradué.

University level second stage: 2nd cycle:

Postgraduate training in Law and Education for future teachers and lawyers is offered at the Centre Universitaire de Luxembourg (stages judiciaires et pédagogiques). Postgraduate seminars in the field of comparative Law, Economics, and European Studies are offered by the Institut universitaire international.The Centre Universitaire also offers a first postgraduate course in European Law (DESS). Other courses will follow.

 

Teacher education:

Training of pre-primary and primary/basic school teachers

Pre-primary and primary-school teachers are trained for three years at post-secondary level by the Institut supérieur d'Etudes et de Recherches pédagogiques. L'Institut d'Etudes éducatives et sociales prepares students for the Diploma of Graduate Educator.

Training of higher education teachers

At State Institutions, university teachers are appointed by the Minister of National Education for a limited period (5 years) on the recommendation of the departmental and administrative Councils; the appointments are renewable. Members of the academic staff are called: professeurs, chargés de cours, chargés d'enseignement, according to the volume and relative importance of the subject they teach, their responsibility in relation to the course of study as well as their length of service. There is to be an important reform concerning the teaching staff at the Centre Universitaire.

Admission to non university higher education studies

Foreign students admission

Quotas: They are not submitted  to any quotas or numerus clausus.

Admission requirements: Foreign students applying for admission to higher education institutions must hold a Secondary School Leaving Certificate recognized by the Ministère de l'Education nationale. Applications should be made to the individual institutions. Foreign students cannot be admitted to the Institut supérieur d'Etudes et de Recherches pédagogiques. Those wishing to enrol at the Institut universitaire international must hold a postgraduate degree in Law, Political Economics or Political Science. Those who wish to study for the DESS in European Law must hold a university degree in Law.

Entry regulations: A visa is required for non-European Union students.

Health requirements: A health visa is required.

Language requirements: A perfect command of French and German is necessary.

Recognition of studies & qualifications:

Studies pursued in home country (System of recognition/accreditation): In general, Academic Titles, Degrees and Certificates awarded to Luxembourg students by foreign universities and other higher education Institutions are recognized in Luxembourg by means of an official Certificate (homologation) only if they took at least four years of full-time university study. There is no provision for the evaluation and recognition of partial studies undertaken abroad.
