    Course/Program description



    Research in the School

    We offer research degrees in the mainstream areas of communications, control engineering, digital systems, power and solid-state devices and also in specialised areas such as acoustics and sonar and image processing and high temperature superconductivity. The recently formed Education Technology Group aim to develop the educational software and communication devices needed for education and work in the post-networked society. We have strong links with industry particularly BT, DERA, LUL and Kodak Ltd. The School’s Research Assessment Exercise rating is 4 and we were awarded the top score of 24 points in the recent Assessment of Quality in Education Exercise.


    Taught Courses

    These courses comprise of two sections. The first consists of taught material, lectures, tutorials, short assignments and laboratory work, whilst the second section consists of a substantial project.

    This programme is intended to provide specialist education for electronic or electrical engineering graduates who wish to deepen their expertise in communications engineering

    About theUniversity


    The University of Birmingham is a major international centre for postgraduate research and teaching. It has all the benefits of a large, established university: there is a wide range of research opportunities and courses, the standard of teaching is very high and the facilities both for academic work and for social life are varied and of a good quality.

    The School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has approximately 500 undergraduates, 60 research students and 30 MSc students. Research facilities include clean rooms, a 10-kW induction motor test rig, two microwave anechoic chambers, a large network of Sun workstations and superconducting and laser ablation facilities. The School has its own library and provides a computer suite dedicated to postgraduate students.
