The Winter semester begins on 1 October and extends until the end of January, with the Christmas and New Year break. The Summer semester begins in mid-February, after the semester break, and extends until the last week of June, with a short break for Easter holidays. |
| Class size | The maximum number of students who can study within the Programs is 45. According to the Faculty’s rules there should be at least 20 students in one group. |
| Accommodation | The Institute of Political Science will have to its disposal about 10 rooms in a student hotel for students studying within each Program. International students and academics coming to Warsaw University are offered assistance in finding accommodation. | Fees |
Tuition fees cover the cost of participation in the program and have been set for the academic year 2009/2010 at 1,750 euros per semester for the first year students from the EU/EFTA countries and at 2,150 euros per semester for the first year students from outside the EU/EFTA area. In the second year of studies the tuition fee amounts to 1,600 euros and 2,125 euros per semester respectively. In the first year the students from outside the EU/EFTA countries are also obliged to pay additional 200 euro one-off fee. Foreigners, non-EU citizens of Polish origin are liable to 30% discount in tuition fee payment. The tuition fees should be paid by 30 September for the whole first academic year. | Student grants / Financial assistance | The Institute of Political Science will award five scholarships amounting to 30% of the annual tuition fee for five students who achieve the top scores in the first academic year. |
| Exchange partner schools | Institute of Political Science co-operates with many foreign universities. Within the Socrates Program it has signed agreements with almost 50 universities from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Holland, Irland, Italy, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. |

1. Ratio of National / Overseas students Candidates are first of all foreign students from outside the EU/EFTA area. However, about 20% of candidates are from the EU/EFTA countries, including Poland. 2. Ratio of Men / Women The number of male and female candidates are similar. 3. Master's Degree Studies in Political Science and Master's Degree Program in European Studies are addressed primarily to foreigners with a Bachelor's degree awarded upon completion of a Bachelor's degree program (undergraduate studies) in Poland or elsewhere. Graduates of Master's Degree Studies in Political Science will acquire in the intellectual qualifications necessary for analysing political problems from an international perspective. Graduates of Master's Degree Program in European Studies will acquire the qualifications necessary for understanding and analysing the EU countries and their neighbours as well as the process of the European integration from the perspective of a new EU member – Poland – a country which plays a major role in Central and Eastern Europe. Thanks to skill building activities provided during courses, they will be well trained in the art of communication, negotiation and persuasion. The graduates will be fully qualified to take up the posts of analysts and specialists in public administration, universities, national or international institutions and organizations, and companies operating across Europe. In order to receive a Master's degree, the graduates will be required to write a Master’s thesis and pass the examination. The Programs are fee-paying. The language is English. Entry Requirements In order to apply for admission apart from fluent English candidates should meet one of the following conditions: a. hold the Bachelor’s degree in any area of studies in Poland or elsewhere, b. hold the Master’s degree in any area of studies apart from Political Science and European Studies respectively, in Poland or elsewhere Documents to be supplied by candidates General documents: 1. High school diploma 2. One of the two documents certifying: a. Bachelor’s degree in any area of studies in Poland or elsewhere, b. Master’s degree in any area of studies apart from Political Science and European Studies respectively, in Poland or elsewhere Foreign diplomas must be authenticated by the appropriate authorities (see: http://www.hcch.net/index_en.php?act=conventions.authorities&cid=41), if there is no agreement on the mutual recognition of diplomas, translated into Polish by a sworn translator and certified (if there is no agreement on the mutual recognition of diplomas): high school diplomas by the Education Office in Warsaw and university diplomas by the Warsaw University. 3. A candidate who does not have possibility to present any certificate of English language proficiency is required to submit an essay written in English (between 1,000 and 1,500 words) on European Union issues. Please note that you do not need to submit language test certificates if you are a native speaker, English is an official language in your country, you received your education in English at some stage of your educational career, participated in the exchange program where courses were taught in English, English was the language of instruction at your academic or secondary institution, you are a Scandinavian student, or a European student who studied English successfully during the secondary and/or higher education. Health certificate Internet Registration of Candidates - IRK Candidates should register on-line (https://irk.uw.edu.pl), fill in an application form and pay a non-refundable application fee. Application process Candidates will be qualified on the basis on the documents submitted until all places have been filled. The decision made by the Institute of Political Science must be accepted by the Rector of the Warsaw University. When the number of students exceeds the limit (i.e. 45 persons), the additional procedure will be conducted. The candidates will have to prove their English knowledge as well as the general knowledge of subjects included in the program of studies. Institute of Political Science at Warsaw University was founded in 1967 – initially as a part of the Philosophy Faculty. Currently, the Institute operates in the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science. The Institute is the oldest, largest and – for several years – has been rated the best of all political science centres in Poland. As such, it provides teaching and research of the highest standard. The Institute has undergone voluntary academic audit procedures and has received the Teaching Quality Certificate from the University Accreditation Committee. The teaching includes political science studies in the following programs: Master’s degree studies, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies, two-year Master’s degree studies in English and postgraduate Polish studies in English. The Institute employs over 80 academic staff. It is an exceptional team of scholars who have had a long experience in teaching at the Polish universities, mainly in Warsaw. They also deliver lectures as visiting professors at many universities abroad. They do research on many interesting subjects, e.g. Poland and Germany in the EU, political parties’ system and constitutional system in Poland, parliamentary system in Central East Europe countries, European integration, Western democracies, Balkan states and transformation in the states of Central Asia and Transcaucasus, very often in co-operation with other European universities. They also prepare expert opinions for many Polish and European public institutions, working on the projects of the new Polish laws and commenting on the current political events. Several factors contribute to the high level of teaching, among which is the location of the Institute in Poland’s capital, its tradition, experience and prestige. The Institute readily adapts to the changing world modifying existing curricula and embracing new teaching methods.
