Fees The contract signed between Khazar and the students defines what students are required to pay. Khazar reserves the right to change the tuition from year to year.

The tuition fee should be paid either as a one time payment at the beginning of the semester, or in two installments, with the first one not less than a half of the total sum paid in at the beginning of the semester. The rest of the sum must be paid in by the fifth week of the semester.

    School of Engineering and Applied Science

    Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

    The Computer Science Program is designed to accommodate students who want professional preparation in computer science, but do not necessarily have a strong interest in computer systems hardware. Within the curriculum, students study subject matter in software engineering, principles of programming languages, data structures, computer architecture, theory of computation and formal languages, operating systems, distributed systems, computer modelling, computer networks, computer construction, artificial intelligence, mathematical programming.

    The objective of this program is to prepare students either for postgraduate study or for immediate employment, and achievement of professional excellence in a wide range of industrial, business, and non-industrial environments which interface with the information processing systems they study.

    Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering

    Computer engineering is concerned with the modelling, analysis, design, and applications of computer-related systems. Its study provides education at the undergraduate level necessary to understand, design, implement and use the software and hardware of computers and systems. Students study all principal aspects of computer systems: logic design, computer system architecture, data structures, algorithms, operating system concepts, high level programming languages, application of hardware and software systems in both engineering and non-engineering contents. Students combine these computer science studies with pertinent aspects of electrical engineering such as: circuit’s theory, signals and systems, electronic circuits and design, integrated circuits and device utilization.

    The offered courses in economics, management and marketing cover the modern requirements for the professionals in the sphere of computer engineering.

    Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering

    Petroleum Engineering deals with involving of the fluid flow through subsurface formations, drilling, production, reservoir engineering and transportation of oil, gas, and other subsurface resources.

    The curriculum in oil engineering includes sufficient training in basic engineering sciences to prepare the graduates for the application of engineering principles to the petroleum industry. Courses in geology give an understanding of the geological structures and conditions favourable for petroleum deposits.

    Up to the basic subjects are added courses in oil engineering which illustrate the applications of engineering principles to the type of problems and solution methods used in the petroleum industry. The Engineering fundamentals and Computer tools with application to a broad range of engineering problems are emphasized. The offered courses in economics, marketing, management cover the modern requirements for the professionals in the sphere of petroleum engineering.

    A minimum of eight-week approved experience in oil field operation is required. A student who completes this program will receive a Bachelor of Science Degree.

    Students at BS levels are qualified as:

    Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

    The curriculum in Civil Engineering is planned to provide a sound professional education for the students. After completing courses in basic sciences, students are offered courses in Applied Mechanics, Hydraulics, Geodesy, Materials, Construction Engineering, Management fields, etc. Practical experience is required for the degree and accordingly, students are required to undertake summer practice. Elective courses are offered to enable the students to advance their knowledge in specific fields.

    Bachelor of Business Administration (General)

    The SEM offers the Bachelor Degree Programs majoring in Finance, Accounting, International Business, Management, Marketing, International Economics and Information Technology. The programs were developed through close cooperation with American and European business schools.

    Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance

    The program in Finance is designed for students who are interested in careers in the fields of finance, financial analysis, financial management and banking. The program provides a strong awareness of the problems and methods related to financial operations in financial and non-financial institutions.

    Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Auditing

    The Accounting program is designed to provide the basic accounting knowledge and skills required for the accounting and auditing professionals. The program encompasses such areas as financial auditing, operational auditing, financial reporting, corporate tax planning, cost analysis and control.

    Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business

    The program in International Business is primarily designed for the students who want to distinguish themselves as managers in global business environment. The program furnishes students with the professional and cultural knowledge necessary to successfully perform the role of leader and manager in a multinational environment.

    Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing

    The Marketing program is designed to provide the basic knowledge in general marketing, markets and customers relationships, product development, pricing, advertising, promotion and distribution.

    Bachelor of Business Administration in Management

    The program in Management is designed to develop the basic skills required by managers in business and other organizations. The program develops the ability to analyze and resolve administrative and organizational problems in manufacturing and service organizations.

    Bachelor of Science in Economics

    In a competitive business environment, the effective decision making in limited resource allocation has become the key factor of organizational success and prosperity of society. The BS in Economics program offered by SEM embraces activities related to quantitative economic analysis, monetary policy and economic performance, globalization and international relations.

    School of Humanities and Social Sciences

    Bachelor of Arts in Journalism/English

    The Journalism studies program aims at gaining strong professional skills along with a social background in ESL, ESP being an integral part of the latter. The major provides the core of courses essential for today’s print and broadcast news-writer. The journalism curriculum also suggests a wide selection of courses that reflect the changing needs and issues within the field of contemporary journalism.

    Together with the experienced faculty body, the students participate actively in establishing contracts with different Mass Media Institutions and Information agencies.

    Professional development courses promote students’ active participation in Khazar University Press activities, "Khazar View" magazine and Radio and TV Studios.

    Major Requirements for Journalism/English are oriented to:

    Marketing and Advertising in Mass Media

    The students are offered a BA major program which prepares students for careers in journalism, public relations, and advertising, including newspaper reporting and editing, magazine writing, broadcast news, corporate public relations. The program is based on a broad liberal arts foundation, and the knowledge of the social and professional responsibilities of communicators.

    Writing a Course paper is a constant requirement for all the academic years. The students must be engaged in practice in information agencies, newspapers, journals, TV and radio companies.

    Bachelor of Arts in Azerbaijani Language and Literature

    As the name indicates, this program is based on the issues and topics related the Azerbaijani language and literature, as well as, interconnection between the two. The program envisages study of the Azerbaijani literature from the time of its emergence through the periods of its development in chronological order. In this context, life and works of individual writers and poets who lived in different periods are studied, their literary activities are explored, national and global issued they focused on are analyzed, literary influence of one writer/poet on others are determined, and their creative activities are systemized in line with the historical period they lived. Central to the coursework is the study of selected pieces of literary work by the students and discussions about these works. The students are also offered a variety of elective courses.

    Bachelor of Arts in International Relations

    Bachelor of Arts in International Relations/European Studies

    With the collapse of the Communist system and emergence of newly independent states in Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union, International Relations has faced serious changes. The process of globalization is going on and New World Order is taking shape. These dynamics have increased the demand for specialists with highly advanced professional knowledge and deep theoretical understanding of international relations. Career opportunities in the field increase with the growth and diversity of international relations. The diplomatic service and other sectors of public bureaucracy related with international relations, as well as the media, private sector organizations, universities are important places of employment for those having obtained their BA degree in International Relations.

    Khazar University's strong links at the institutional, departmental and professional levels with different American institutions, including universities, foundations and business companies, forms a solid base for establishing the interdisciplinary American and European Studies programs. The Khazar community always enjoys lectures delivered by prominent American and European visitors, including politicians, professors, entrepreneurs and artists.

    Bachelor of Arts in Political Science

    This undergraduate program aims to provide understanding of basic political processes and institutions as these operate in different national and international contexts. The program is designed in similar way with International Relations. It also covers the changing character of the relations between citizens and governments. General objectives and career perspectives of the program are very similar to those in International Relations.

    Bachelor of Science in Psychology (New)

    Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education

    The program in Elementary Education is based on professional knowledge and skills in classroom teaching with a diversity of teaching methods. Internships are necessary part of the program. Students teach in the Khazar University Lab School "Dunya".

    Bachelor of Science in Teaching of Math and Computer Science

    School of Education together with the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Khazar University offers a program of study that leads to a bachelor's degree and an elementary and secondary school teaching certification in Mathematics and Information Science. For the degree, a student must meet the requirements in general education courses, professional education courses, mathematics and information science courses.

    Each student will observe and analyze real school situations within the context of trends, issues, theories, and information available in the content and professional literature of mathematics. At the discretion of the classroom teacher the student may also participate in classroom activities.

    Bachelor of Science in History and Geography Education (New)

    “Dunya” Primary School offers its students the best academic environment, active student involvement, a balanced combination of established tradition and modem ideas and facilities. Beginning from the 3rd grade students are taught by teachers specialized in subjects, providing them with a greater exposure to the different approaches to the learning experience.

    Middle and Secondary School
    According to “Dunya” School's approach, high school education should prepare students for an independent life and the university entrance exam.     IB Diploma Programme
    “Dunya” IB World School affiliated with Khazar University is authorized to offer Diploma Programme of international education to students aged 16 to 19 (10th & 11th grades) from September 2009. (www.khazar.org/dunya)

    The IB Diploma Programme is about more than 6 subjects that students study at high level or standard level. Students must choose one subject from each group 1 to 5 ensuring the breadth of experience in languages, social studies, experimental sciences and mathematics. At its heart three core requirements that are integral and makes IB Diploma Programme unique.

    Master of Science in Computer Science

    The graduate program is designed to meet the demands for specialized computer scientists and engineers in industry and in higher education which also gives opportunity to qualified students from various academic disciplines for further education at an advanced level in Computer Science. Graduate students may specialize in Network Programming, Computer Graphics and Multimedia Systems, and Applied Mathematics.

    In addition to meeting the minimum university requirements for graduate study, applicants must have an adequate undergraduate preparation in computer science and management. Students entering the program without the appropriate background will be expected to take certain undergraduate courses as a prerequisite.

    The MS program requires 39 graduate credits, including 6 credits for the Master's thesis.

    Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering

    Graduate studies in Petroleum Engineering prepares the engineer to assume responsibility in technical and management areas within the oil and gas industry. The graduate petroleum engineer can expect to be challenged quickly and in areas of strong potential for personal and professional growth.

    Candidates with superior skills and the desire to progress within the industry can expect to be successful. The School of Engineering and Applied Science prepare the advanced student with the technical skills required to meet those challenges.

    The Master's program requires 39 graduate credits above the baccalaureate degree, including 6 credits for the thesis.

    Master of Science in Civil Engineering

    Civil Engineering encompasses a broad range of professional activities. MS programs provide for the combination of state of the art knowledge in applied science and technology and aim at the creation of new and original information in civil engineering disciplines. Specific attention is paid to national and regional needs.

    The MS program requires 39 graduate credits, including 9 credits for Management courses and 6 credits for the thesis.

    The program for the Master of Science degree is determined by the advisor of the student according to the field of specialization.

    Master of Science in Mathematics

    The main objective of the Master’s Degree Program is to train highly qualified specialists and researchers in pure and applied mathematics.

    Modern mathematics is not only the language of science and technology but it also contains enormous varieties of sub-branches and fascinating areas of research. Accordingly, research activities are conducted in a broad variety of areas, from the most theoretical branches to the highly computational and applied ones.

    The Master’s Degree Program requires 39 graduate credits, including 6 credits for the research-oriented thesis.

    The course program is determined by the advisor of the student according to the field of specialization. Ph.D. Degree

    The Ph.D. programs are designed to prepare students for advanced study and research in the major areas of engineering, computer science and applied mathematics.

    Students entering the Ph.D. program normally are expected to have completed the requirements for the Master's degree and to have demonstrated creative ability. Normally the MS degree is required for admission to the Ph.D. program.

    The candidate with a Master Degree admitted to the Ph.D. program is required to take at least 7 courses (32 to 56 credits) including a dissertation, although more credits and courses may be required to satisfy the particular aims of the student and the student's advisor. A student should complete the Major Requirements with G.P.A. 80 or above. Some Ph.D. majors allow a student to earn no more than 6 credits by teaching appropriate courses.

    Upon the satisfactory completion of the course-work and the qualifying examination, a student selects a dissertation topic. Candidates shall demonstrate their abilities for independent study in their dissertations performing the original research.

    The Ph.D. dissertation is usually worth some 10-12 credits but in some exceptional cases the number of credits for a Ph.D. dissertation may by increased.

    Each doctoral candidate must pass a final oral examination defense of his/her dissertation and demonstrate the wide knowledge of a major field and the role and the significance of the dissertation in relation to the field.

    Master of Business Administration (MBA)

    The MBA program develops general management abilities and provides advanced knowledge and skills in various areas of business activities depending on concentrations and majors. The qualifications gained by the program graduates are crucial to become a leader in the business community.

    At the highest level of business qualifications, the Khazar University MBA program offers an intensive management development path. The skills and knowledge developed in the MBA program are applicable to all forms of organization and are useful both to professional managers and to those with entrepreneurial ambitions.

    The Khazar University MBA program was developed in 1996 through close cooperation with Western Business Schools, and particular academic support from the College of Business Administration, Georgia State University, USA. Under this partnership framework, funded by The Eurasia Foundation, GSU staff and faculty members took an active part in developing and conducting MBA courses at Khazar University. In addition, to strengthen their instructional skills, almost all SEM faculty members have had in-service training and faculty development at GSU.

    Khazar University, Nottingham Trent University, UK and Haarlem Business School, Netherlands, are involved in "Tempus Tacis Compact Project", which considers long-lasting cooperation for academic quality development at Khazar University, and develops the university’s MBA curriculum further.

    The university’s strong academic and professional networks offer tremendous opportunities for intellectual exchange and practical experience within Azerbaijan and overseas.

    It is from this background that the Khazar University MBA program enables the faculty and students to explore business problems from a multidisciplinary perspective that emphasizes interpersonal skills and teamwork, develops leadership and entrepreneurial talents, increases global awareness and improves technological knowledge.

    Program outline

    The full-time MBA program runs over a two year period, with a variety of teaching and learning methods being used - a combination of lectures, seminars, case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities. For assessment, the program considers a combination of formal assignments, group presentations and written examinations, together with a major project.

    Part-time enrolment is designed for students who cannot enrol on a full-time basis and requires completion of the degree within four years. To be eligible for the part-time enrolment students must earn in each semester at least six credits. Part-time students can opt to enrol in full-time MBA classes when available.

    Experienced MBA students are provided with the opportunity to use their previous employment experience and relate this to the program material. The key advantage of the program is that the class schedule accommodates students with full-time employment.

    Admission

    Graduates of higher learning institution with a Bachelors degree or equivalent, and people with professional experience are eligible to apply for the Khazar University MBA program.

    Master of Science in Economics

    The MS in Economics is designed to provide the in-depth theoretical and applied training needed to function successfully as professional economists in the corporate and business environment, and as researcher for further Ph.D. degree. The program furnishes the students with a solid background in economic theory, knowledge of analytical, qualitative and quantitative tools needed for decision making in various business settings. To complete the program a student must obtain 45 credits: 21 Core Courses and 24 Major Courses.

    Dual MBA Program in International Management, Marketing, Global Finance and Banking

    Khazar University jointly with SBS – Swiss Business School offers Dual MBA program in International Management, Marketing, Global Finance and Banking. This is the first double degree MBA program in Azerbaijan.

    Ph.D. Degree Program

    The doctoral program of the SEM is designed to develop in the student a high level of competence in conducting business research. To accomplish these objectives, the program provides a course of study emphasizing the contemporary theoretical knowledge, quantitative techniques, and research methodology in the student’s major field. In addition, students enrolled into the doctoral degree studies receive individualized approach to meet his/her background and objectives.

    The doctoral program requires the student to demonstrate mastery of professional knowledge and proficiency in the techniques of research. This is evidenced by the successful completion of appropriate, robust coursework and examinations, effective performance during classroom instruction, participation with faculty members in research, presentation of papers and reports, and the writing of a dissertation.

    The Ph.D. dissertation is usually worth 10-12 credits but in some exceptional cases the number of credits for a Ph.D. dissertation may by increased.

    The candidate with a Master Degree admitted to the Ph.D. program is required to take at least an additional 7 courses (32 to 56 credits) including a dissertation although more credits and courses may be required to satisfy the particular aims of the student and the student's advisor. A student should complete the Major Requirements with G.P.A. 80 or above. Some Ph.D. majors allow a student to earn no more than 6 credits by teaching appropriate courses.

    Research fields for Ph.D. degree are Finance, International Business, Management and Economics.

    Programs of Study

    Programs of study include Business Foundations, Quantitative and Economic Foundations, Quantitative and Research Methods, Economics, and Major Field. A minimum of forty-eight semester hours in the area of Quantitative and Research Methods, Economics, and Major Field, excluding dissertation credit, must be completed for graduation. A maximum of 15 semester hours is allowed in transfer. No course work that has been completed more than five years prior to admission to candidacy may be used to meet any doctoral requirement. The student may be admitted to candidacy for a Ph.D. degree when she/he has completed all requirements for the degree except for the dissertation. Student admitted to the candidacy at each semester should register for dissertation semester hours. Ph.D. Degree Program

    The Ph.D. programs in Legal Studies, International Law, International Relations and Political Science are the highly specialized ones. The aim of these programs is to develop the candidate's skills in the appropriate fields and to increase his/her capacity to make research that will contribute to the existing theory and knowledge.     All requirements for the Ph.D. must be met approximately in three years.

    During the first year, student must choose an advisor according to his/her and faculty research interests. The Ph.D. Student's outline is prepared according to his/her educational background and characteristic features of the dissertation and must be approved by the Dissertation Committee consisting of Ph.D. Candidate's adviser, and four experts. Two of the latter must be external experts.

    Ph.D. candidates are required to present a dissertation of approximately 300 pages of research, analysis and collaborating data. The Ph.D. dissertation is usually worth some 10-12 credits but in some exceptional cases the number of credits for a Ph.D. dissertation may be increased.

    Students defend their dissertation at a final oral examination that is open to the public.

    School of Humanities and Social Sciences

    Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

    The MA programs in TESL, Linguistics and Translation Studies are 1,5 - 2-year programs designed to improve teachers' performance in the ESL classroom, to investigate some particular aspects of teaching and learning English as a second language.

    The course of graduate study includes both the practical and theoretical elements in all three fields of study. The practical element of the course consists of:

    • observing classes
    • planning lessons
    • classroom teaching

    The students should become familiar with current theories regarding the nature of the language, as well as the ways of language acquisition. They are also expected to be able to relate the theoretical guidelines to practical procedures.

    Master of Arts in Linguistics

    This program serves as an introduction to general linguistics. Students learn abut general and basic problems in the study of language, including the differences between linguistic theory and normative grammar; the general principles of linguistics; and examine various hypotheses on the links between language and culture.

    Master of Arts in Literature of Foreign Countries

    The primary aims of this program include honing students' ability to explore deeply, analytically, and actively literature of foreign countries. Course aims are achieved through the following activities: thinking, discussing, and actively participating in the class; an oral presentation; various writing assignments about prose, poetry, and drama. It is used to learn about the respective countries' literature and arts, and how to evaluate ideas and aesthetic forms.

    Master of Arts in Azerbaijani Language

    This program is based on the issues and topics related to the Azerbaijani language. Language part of the program mainly focuses on the extensive study of the grammatical structures of the modern Azerbaijani language. At the same time, linguistic matters, history of the literary language, and teaching methods are covered on a comparative basis.

    Master of Arts in Azerbaijani Literature

    The program envisages study of the Azerbaijani literature from the time of its emergence through the periods of its development in chronological order. In this context, life and works of individual writers and poets who lived in different periods are studied, their literary activities are explored, national and global issued they focused on are analyzed, literary influence of one writer/poet on others are determined, and their creative activities are systemized in line with the historical period they lived.

    Master of Arts in Translation

    In this program, students explore those aspects of linguistics which are applied to the process of translation. After a short introduction to the history of translation, students focus on the problems of language and reference, and linguistic signs and reference.

    Master of Arts in Regional Studies (USA, Middle East, Europe)

    Regional Studies include concentrations in European Studies, American Studies, Caucasus Studies, Turkic World Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Russian Studies, and East Asian Studies.

    Area Studies programs are interdisciplinary and include several departments. Except students admitted to the Middle Eastern Studies and European Public Affairs programs, all other area studies students will have an individual study track, designed conjointly by several faculty members and tailored towards meeting students interests.

    Students concentrating in the regional studies need six courses in the two-year program. Ideally they should mix more policy oriented courses with those that have a more "classical" and historical bent, including the research seminar. The program does not cover particular countries as much as it examines a more general political and historical tradition that shapes the politics and life of this certain region. Students who choose the area sub-fields must pass one of the area language proficiency examinations.

    Master of Arts in International Relations: Conflict Studies & European Public Affairs
    Master of Arts in International Relations: Area Studies

    The curriculum of the MA degree program in International Relations is designed to provide students with a broad analytical background in the major fields of international affairs, combined with the specific focus gained through either a functional or regional concentration.

    The purpose of the required curricula is to ensure that every student in the program receives basic, broad-based, interdisciplinary training in international affairs. This includes graduate level course-work in international politics, and historical, political, and social process.

    The small number of students admitted each year allows the program to be tailored to individual needs and encourages close student faculty contact. The program intends to provide a solid academic background for students planning careers related to development, whether in government, private volunteer agencies or business related sectors.

    Master of Arts in Political Science

    The MA Program in Political Science is similar to that in International Relations. The program of study is usually completed in four terms of full-time study with 58 credits and a GPA not less than 75.

    Ph.D. Program

    All applications for admission to the program must be approved by the Committee of Graduate Studies. There are several criteria for admission, none of which will be arbitrarily disregarded, and the best applicants will meet or exceed all of these criteria. However, the Admissions Committee will consider the individual aspects of each application.

    The Ph.D. program is developed for students with strong academic skills and research interests. An individual program of study is designed for each Ph.D. student, considering his/her particular academic needs and research interests.

    The candidate with a Master Degree admitted to the Ph.D. program is required to take at least 7 additional courses (32 to 56 credits) including a dissertation although more credits and courses may be required to satisfy particular aims of the student and the student's advisor. A student should complete the Major Requirements with a G.P.A. of 80 or above. Some Ph.D. majors allow a student to earn no more than 6 credits by teaching appropriate courses.

    Upon the satisfactory completion of the course-work and the qualifying examination, students select a dissertation topic. Candidates must demonstrate their ability of independent study in their dissertations performing the original research, and must present themselves at the final oral examination, in which they must defend their dissertations as estimable contributions to the knowledge in their fields and demonstrate mastery in their areas of specialization as related to the dissertation. They must take the final oral examination (defense of the dissertation) within five years after passing the written examination. Any exception to this rule must be approved by the Dissertation Committee and the Dean of the School, and may involve repetition of the final examination.

    School of Education

    Master of Science in Elementary Education

    The Master of Science Degree in Education is awarded to students satisfactorily completing an appropriate program of study consisting of course work credit and either a thesis or a comprehensive assessment. Students in the Science Education program are strongly encouraged to consider the thesis option for the culminating experience. This Master’s degree program provides advanced study for practitioners for teaching and careers in elementary education.

    Master of Science in Education Administration

    Students interested in careers as future education administrators receive a comprehensive program of study that explores academic affairs, student affairs, and administrative affairs. Courses offered in the program develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for success in education administrations. Ph.D. in Elementary Education

    Create an individualized doctoral program that fits your unique elementary education research interests. Complement such core program work as advanced research, educational philosophy, advanced learning theory, and history and politics with electives in such areas as adult learning, mathematics, science, educational leadership, and virtual school instruction and assessment strategies.
