MSc in Accounting and Finance

The MSc course in Accounting and Finance of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) is a leading European postgraduate program which has been operating successfully since 2004. The program has been designed to offer high-quality specialized scientific knowledge in the fields of Accounting and Finance, focusing on current international developments in the area. The program is offered on both a full-time and a part-time basis. The one-year full-time program is designed for students who have recently graduated and seek to continue their studies at the postgraduate level, while the two-year part-time program meets the needs of business executives. For each of the abovementioned courses, students can major in Accounting or in Finance.

The aim of the course is to foster a new generation of accounting and finance professionals capable of analyzing the corporate challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the global financial environment. This aim is pursued by offering a modern, well-designed program that is based on varied teaching methods, which include study of the international literature, laboratory-supported lectures, case studies, individual and team project assignments, a thesis, and guest lectures by our executive visiting speakers. The University’s infrastructure also contributes to this aim, providing access to relevant scientific and professional journals, and also to databases that allow quick and effective access to information. Furthermore, the Department’s Laboratories, and the University library and Computer Centre, enable postgraduate students to study and carry out high-quality research.

In addition, we take pride in attracting the most motivated, highly achieving individuals who are looking to develop their research, analytical, conceptual and critical thinking skills to the highest level and become innovators in their chosen fields of expertise. Graduates of the Master’s Program in Accounting and Finance follow distinguished careers. They are highly employable and they work in positions such as accountants, directors of accounting departments, financial directors, auditors, financial analysts, and evaluators of investment projects, while some of them follow academic careers.

Last but not least, studying for an MSc in Greece affords international students the opportunity to acquaint and familiarize themselves with a beautiful environment that blends a long tradition of excellence in commerce with a robust academic curriculum, within a dynamic modern economy. Studying at AUEB will surely prove to be a great experience for all international students, who are encouraged to make the most out of it! Whether students participate in computer-backed courses, attend lectures by business executives and leaders, or just experience the Mediterranean way of life and cuisine, it is certain that their studies in the Master’s Program in Accounting and Finance program will turn out to be an unforgettable, life altering experience!

Program Structure

Following approval by the Hellenic Ministry of Education, the Master’s Program Curriculum is equivalent to 75 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit units. The curriculum includes twelve course units (5 ECTS credits each). Upon completion of the taught courses, students are required to complete an MSc thesis, which is equal to three course units (15 ECTS credits). There are both compulsory and elective course units. There are nine compulsory course units in the Accounting stream and ten compulsory course units in the Finance stream. The Postgraduate Program Committee, taking into consideration the students’ preferences and the availability of academic staff, decides on the elective course units offered each year. The Athens University of Economics & Business

The Department

The Department of Accounting and Finance of AUEB was established in 1999, co-financed by the Ministry of Education and the European Union. The Department’s mission is the advancement of knowledge and research in the fields of Accounting and Finance.

The curriculum of the Department is modern, and equivalent in structure and content to corresponding undergraduate programs of top Universities all over the world. At the same time the Department’s program is designed to accommodate the professional needs for accounting and finance skills in the Greek market place.

Since its establishment, the Department has gained popularity amongst prospective undergraduate students of business and economics. It is noteworthy that the Department ranks first, in terms of students’ preferences, among similar Departments in the country, due in part to the significant prospects for future employment. In the academic year 2009-10, 213 students were accepted into the Department’s undergraduate program.

In addition, the Department has organized a series of workshops and conferences in the academic fields of accounting and finance, in order to create linkages with the Greek and the international scientific and professional communities, to provide a forum for scientific dialogue, and to promote high-quality research. In this context, the Department has successfully undertaken the organization of numerous conferences, including the following:

  • 17th Annual Meeting of the European Financial Management Association, the biggest financial conference in Europe (June 25-28, 2008), in collaboration with the National University of Athens.

  • International Accounting Conference (March 2004), in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

  • 2nd Annual Meeting of the Hellenic Finance and Accounting Association (November 2003).

  • 24th Annual Congress of the European Accounting Association, the biggest conference in accounting in Europe (April 2001).

Furthermore, the Department organizes a series of seminars in accounting and finance, in which faculty members from the Department as well as from other Greek or foreign Universities present their research. These seminars are open to all the Department’s postgraduate students. One of the core activities of the Department is undertaking pioneering research and disseminating the findings to the academic and business community, and to its students. These research findings are incorporated into the courses in the MSc program, thus contributing to the high-quality, up-to-date content of the courses. Faculty members, PhD candidates through their PhD dissertations, and MSc students through their MSc theses, investigate innovative issues in the fields of accounting and finance. The majority of faculty members are young scientists with standing in the European and international academic community, with regular participation in international conferences, and publications in international scientific and professional journals.

    The Institution

Established more than 85 years ago, the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) has always been on the forefront of education and research. Our University has produced by far the largest number of industry leaders, entrepreneurs and managers and has thus played a key role in the development of the country. At the same time, AUEB is privileged to have excellent faculty. Enjoying the best reputation in Greece, and having developed a strong research orientation, AUEB attracts faculty who have previously been on the faculties of some of the best schools internationally, like Wharton, Columbia, London School of Economics, Cambridge, INSEAD, London Business School, Fuqua, and others. In addition, renowned scientists and political figures, including Nobel Prize winners in Economics, have been awarded Honorary Degrees from AUEB. Moreover, according to a recent survey by the Social Science Research Network (October 2006), AUEB is ranked 6th in terms of research and publications in a list of 799 Business Schools worldwide (not including the USA).
