Heriot-Watt is a vibrant, forward looking University offering a high quality learning experience and a welcoming and friendly environment. With an international reputation for innovative education, enterprise and leading edge but practical research, it is one of the leading UK universities for business and industry. Often referred to as Scotland's international university, Heriot-Watt has four student campuses: three in Scotland - Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders and Orkney - and a campus in Dubai.
Heriot-Watt University is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK. The name commemorates George Heriot - the 16th century financier to King James, and James Watt - the great 18th century inventor and engineer. The University originated as the School of Arts of Edinburgh in 1821, and in 1966, Heriot-Watt became a University by Royal Charter.
At Heriot-Watt, the community of postgraduate students undertaking taught and research courses is 1,500 strong and has representation from around 100 countries.
Around two thirds of the on-campus students are from countries outside of the UK. With this in mind there is huge opportunity for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary interaction. This opportunity has been recognised by the University through the creation of a new multi-million pound, purpose built Post Graduate Centre.
Research pooling amongst the Scottish Universities is leading to multi-site lectures, tutorials and research-group meetings, enabled by virtual conferencing. Expanding collaborations with industry and the commercial sector, always a strong feature at Heriot-Watt mean that more than ever there is a need for a central forum for meetings, real or virtual, where fertilisation of ideas crossing the disciplines can take place.
Establishment of the Postgraduate Centre was approved by the University Planning & Management Executive in May 2005 with the first taught-course students to experience the benefits of our investment will be those entering in Autumn 2008.
