A Guide to Graduate Programmes in Arts, Business, Economics, Engineering, Humanities, Management, MBA, Science

Internationally recognised MBA qualifications are designed for practicing managers aspiring to higher positions. The emphasis is on strategic analysis, interdisciplinary skills, intellectual stimulation and independent judgement.

Being equipped to handle the opportunities and threats of today's dynamic business environment has never been more important. New products, new markets, off-shore resourcing, mergers, and new technologies all create uncertainty and opportunity. An MBA helps position you to take advantage of the opportunities and protects you from the threats. A Master of Business Administration provides you with a broad view of the functional areas of business.

Credibility… Confidence… A big-picture perspective... Appreciation for other points of view… That's what MBA graduates say when asked what the degree has done for them.

Some scholars view the MBA as an academic degree on a par with masters degrees in other academic disciplines such as physics or philosophy. Such courses will involve considerable academic depth and will usually require students to write an academic dissertation as part of the course. Such courses will appeal to individuals who particularly enjoyed being stretched intellectually during their first degree.

Other schools view the MBA as a vocational course which helps students to develop the practical skills that leaders and senior managers need in order to be effective. MBAs of this type include lots of role-play, group exercises and projects involving the solution of real problems in real organisations. This type of MBA will appeal to you if your objective by the end of the course is to be better at leading and managing rather than just to be expert in the theories on which management is based.

Developing an effective MBA programme takes time and so there is some degree of correlation between the length of time that the MBA has been in existence and its quality.

Mature MBA programmes are more likely to have a well developed global network of alumni that can be an excellent source of job opportunities and the development of business relationships.

While work experience is not an absolute requirement for admission, it is highly preferred. In a well run MBA programme much of the learning is from the other students that you work with on projects and case studies. Most schools like to see work experience in students because few issue in management are hard and fast and also because it enriches the classroom experience for all students. Generally, a background of several years of work experience strengthens an applicant’s profile and makes them more competitive in the job market on graduation.

London is one of the foremost cultural centers of the world. Its offerings in theater, music, opera, ballet, art and film are unrivaled, and it is rich in architecture and literary and historical associations. Its many institutions of commercial, cultural and historic importance offer students an understanding of life on an international scale. The Campus

Schiller’s residential campus provides excellent facilities for study in London. The London campus is located at Royal Waterloo House, a few hundred yards form the famous Waterloo Station.
